Herr’s Buffalo Blue Cheese Flavored Cheese Curls

Hey there, Junk Food Guy Nation.  Thanks to everyone who followed my Twitter feed, @junkfoodguy, while I went away to the beach for the weekend, and who tweeted me along the way.  I’m back in our nation’s capital, sunburnt as hell, and ready to tackle another week of delicious snacks.

Wanted to briefly mention the US Women’s Soccer team loss to Japan in the World Cup Final.  It was a good showing, and a sad ending considering the remarkable run by the US women.  A well played game from both sides – ah well.

Today’s snack: Herr’s Buffalo Blue Cheese Flavored Cheese Curls!

The Money Shot

This is the first Herr’s product I’ve reviewed, but certainly not the first I’d eaten.  And if there’s one thing I know about, it’s cheese curls.  Herr’s ranks right up there in taste and quality with Utz and Cheetos.  Puffy and light, cheese curls (or cheesy poofs) wonderfully produce the cheesy fingers shown by my logo.

Buffalo Blue Cheese Flavored Cheese Curls caught my eye for obvious reasons – another snack trying to replicate that Buffalo Wing flavor.  The bag itself has a big ass picture of a wing on it.  Ok, Herr’s.  I accept your challenge.

Does anyone believe this has real cheese?

I was skeptical from the start after my Bugles disaster.  Herr’s was going one step further, pushing not only Buffalo flavor but also Blue Cheese flavor!  And to that end, it claimed on the package that these cheese curls were “Oven Baked with real CHEESE!”  Yeah, ok.  I didn’t realize blue cheese was that good oven-baking type.  Gross.

Change IS good

Cheddar, hot wing sauce, tangy blue cheese.  If Herr’s can pull this off, this WOULD be a snack sensation.

Of course!

Obligatory confetti writing on the package.  It’s cartoon-y crap like this, pasted all over the bag, that make me question the contents inside.  Let’s just get to it, shall we?

Glowing orange puffs!

OK, I will admit, though I am being a bit harsh on this product in my writing, it’s getting lots of points in my book already simply because it is a bag of delicious cheese curls.  There’s no way I WON’T like this, it’s just a matter of whether I’ll be buying these in the future vs. normal cheese curls.

Side thought – Herr’s most often uses foil lined bags, whereas other companies don’t bother.  Why is this? To help incubate the product? If anyone knows, leave me a comment below.

Very Orange with tiiiny black specks

My close-up please (still not sure about the specks)

Looking like conventional cheese curls, the only difference I noticed were tiny black specks on the surface of the curl.  What could these be?  I honestly had no clue, as I bit into my first curl…

Poofy Goodness

…Hmmmm, interesting.  This was a snack built on aftertaste, for sure.  It lacked any Buffalo Wing spice, but did, after the cheddar settled, exude a good hot sauce tang.  This tang then gave way, pleasantly, into the familiar creamy bite of blue cheese.  Not overwhelming at all, the cheddar, blue cheese, and hot sauce tang was perfectly balanced.  Although I don’t think this snack had the “spicy goodness” Herr’s promised, it did have enough hot sauce and blue cheese flavor to warrant a repeat tasting.

For those grading at home, I’d give these curls a solid B.

See you tomorrow, junk food fans!

Sincerely, Junk Food Guy

A colleague and I happened to love these curls the one time they were in the vending machine here at work, coining them a “flavor explosion”. Unfortunately they have not re-appeared in the vending machine.

If these are not an A, what curls do rate as an A?

I found Herr’s Buffalo Blue Cheese Curls at Big Lots. Absolutely loved them. My husband and son love spicy food my daughter does not, they reallly liked them and finished off the bag. I have been checking back at the stores that sell Herr’s’ brands but have not been able to find the Buffalo Blue Cheese Curls. Reallly wish I could find them they actually have the flavor of blue chesse and wing sauce.

Just found them at Manard’s in the big 7 ounce bag !!!!!! I disagree with your “B” rating. I have never tasted a cheese curl this satisfiying. Every bite is packed with awesome flavor, they are certainly a solid “A”.

There was a full rack in our vending machine when I gave it a try. Came back an hour later, they were all gone. Vender never restocked it with this awsome treat.
