Review: Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels & CHRISTMAS IS HERE (apparently)

Well, Junk Food Nation, it’s official: Christmas is here.  And by Christmas, I mean November 1 through January 1.  The holiday formally known as Christmas is really two months of sheer holiday overload. It is amazing – as soon as Halloween is over, stores go into super-blitz mode, inundating you with colorful lights and seasonal music. I often wonder how stores turn over their products so quickly – one day you walk into a CVS and its all orange and black with fake cobwebs and heaps of candy, and the next day its a winter wonderland.  (And no, I don’t think its elves doing it – I think it’s some guy named Curt who got stuck with the shitty job of having to stay late and decorate).

Yesterday, on November 1, here’s how I know Christmas was here:

1. I opened my mailbox, and my first Christmas card was sitting there.

2. Starbucks has holiday cups.

3. CVS and Walgreens has Christmas lights for sale.

4. And then finally, while walking down the junk food aisle, I saw these: Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels.

The Money Shot

Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels, huh?  I know I’VE never seen these before.  I mean, pretzel snowflakes dipped in peppermint white fudge??? I knew it was just a holiday gimmick, but I was sucked in.  These clearly had the anticipated effect. Not listed on the Rold Gold website, I felt like I had earned another junk food discovery WIN.

Bag like a finely wrapped present

Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels features a deep red bag, with the print of ruffled wrapping paper or maybe its red silky ribbon.  In any case, the deep red clearly indicates a holiday theme. Would these look as good in bright green wrapping, also a holiday color? Unsure.

White fudge snowflakes

A singular Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzel is clearly displayed on the front of this bag, and it contrasts nicely with the red background.  The flowing font matches well with the theme of the snack, almost as if the words Peppermint Dipped were written in peppermint icing.  All in all, this really was a beautiful packaging job.

One thing I will note, however – this was $3.29 for a 7oz bag!  Holy hell, Rold Gold.

Oh, Rold Gold – indulgence is not a pleasure I’VE been neglecting…

Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels apparently feels the need to remind me to indulge.  Um, have you SEEN this blog?  Still, I love the description of the snack here (Cool and Crunchy) and Frito-Lay is correct – these have both the taste and aesthetic look to act as a garnish to anything – cakes, ice cream, pizza…

Throwing stars

As soon as I opened the bag, my nostrils were immediately filled with the scent of peppermint – very very appealing.  I’ve eaten a lot of [—-]-covered things in my day – chocolate covered pretzels, yogurt covered raisins, fudge covered cookies – but none looked as elegant as these Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels.  Let’s look closer.

Two star flavor?

Perfectly shaped, these pretzels looked just as they did on the packaging.  Slightly flecked with pinkish red, to send home that “peppermint” message, these pretzels were heavy with fudge, smelling great, and because I imagine the fudge gave them more structural integrity, completely unbroken in the bag.  Positive marks so far!

Speckled with Pink

I took one bite of these Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes Pretzels, and was IN LOVE.  These were really really good.  Really good.  I can’t even use more flowery adjectives!  The pretzel was crisp and indeed salty, which blended well with the immediately sweet fudgey tasted of the white fudge and the strong strong flavor of the peppermint.  These were tasty and refreshing at the same time – Almost like a really good mint chocolate cookie!  Honestly, these kind of reminded me of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies.

EXCELLENT junk food.  You really outdid yourselves with this one, Rold Gold and Frito-Lay.  Awesome job.

    Mary Jane in Michigan

  2. So, not only have I been obsessing about finding and claiming these as my own, but I’ve also got my friends in on the search. I will find them! Apparently, they’ve made an appearance in a nearby Wawa, and I can’t wait to try them for myself!

@Nicole – Walgreens! And I know how you feel, searching and searching – I same way I felt re: the Schweddy Balls Ice Cream

  3. Barb says:

IT’S CRAZY THE TASTE AND THE CRUNCH AND THE TEXTURE AND ALL OF THE EXPLOSIVE TASTES AND FLAVORS GOING OFF ALL AT ONCE YOU JUST KEEP GOING AND NON STOP CRAVING THESE MOUTH WATERING SNOWFLAKES. TOMORROW WILL BE A 4 BAG DAY, THIS WILL LAST ME UNTIL THE WEEKEND.

  7. Christine says:

These peppermint pretzels are the most delicious things ever. Period.

  8. Jojo says:

I stumbled upon these yesterday in CVS. @junkfoodguy, I concur with the fact that they’re really expensive – they were on sale 2 for $6, for 7oz bags…..really Rold Gold….holy cow, but I wish I would’ve gotten 2 bags because they were worth every penny!!! I love white fudge, I love peppermint, and they both went so well with the saltiness of the pretzels. I wanted to wolf down the entire bag but I saved some for today after lunch and I’ve been thinking about them all morning. How sick is that? Can we sign a petition or something to keep them around? I need to come up with another “flowery” adjective……fudgymintysaltycrunchylicious?? 🙂

  9. junkfoodguy says:

@Jojo – I like the adjective! I STILL have some sticker shock. This was one of those rare items I actually had to STOP myself from gorging on all of them…deep breath, but pretzel down, put away bag.

  10. angie says:

OMG i found these at Costco and a nearly 2 lb bag is $6.78 I think so dont buy at walgreens buy at Costco!! I sent a bag to my husbands workplace and they want more! I so hoping that Rold Gold stops making them after Christmas so I dont gain 100 pounds and blame it on Frito Lay!!!! LOL

  11. Lynn says:

I also scored! But my story is pathetic. Found the 26 oz bag-yes, OMG, bigger than yours -at the Costco in Gilbert, AZ. Was at my daughter-in-laws and opened them long enough for one bite and they were a bit warm/melty, so they went into the fridge. Can you believe I left them there when we loaded up and left back for California? So the pathetic part is I told my sister in Riverside, CA to look for them there because we were 100 miles from a Costco and a day or two from going there. She insisted she was on a mission not finding them there or on line as I searched for them there also. Okay, I had to call my daughter-in-law and have her send me two bags in the mail. Today, we are in pretzel heaven. I want to thank my aunt, rest her soul for introducing me to ‘bark covered pretzels’ in the 60’s-to which I thought, oh, ick–but hid with the tin of them and ate all of them. The best taste combo yet. I will fire off a note to Frito-Lay and ask what the deal is and ask why they hid little bags here and there and gave the big bags to one Costco in 200 mile radius from me….

  12. Lynn says:

@Angie: What city was that Costco in? Still looking for one close to my sister.

  13. Sean says:

My wife got these and she LOVES them. The bag emptied quick and went back for more… SOLD OUT! We have checked 3 Costcos and they are GONE. Um… isn’t it prudent as a business to sell stuff people want? Costco said they will not get any more and Rold Gold’s website is a joke. What gives?

  14. dontgivapeep says:

Can you recommend drinks to go with this? So tasty, but what will complement it?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Sean – Rold Gold giveth and they taketh away

@dontgiveapeep – I think a nice cocktail made with baileys, creme de menthe and vodka would make complement these quite nicely.

    • bbb says:

Don’t pretzels and beer go together?

  15. Ruth says:

Y? Y? cruel world! I finished my 2nd 1lb+ bag & left the 3rd bag at a party. I literally had to throw the bag over to my husband to hide from me cuz I’m so addicted. Husband told me Costco only had 4 bags left when he got the 3rd bag & I joked that he should have bought more. How true. Today my daughter asked & Costco said they were gone & I double checked the store. These were going to be Christmas presents. I was going to give them to everyone I loved & take them to my family get together, but now. I agree with the posts above. It’s too early not to get another shipment. I’m camping out at Frito Lay in Dallas. I’ve licked the white fudge crumbs from the bag & have saved that bag. look for me on the news, I’ll be the one with that bag over my head, trying to live off the peppermint fumes, oh, the withdrawal pains are so bad, help me

  16. Kay Karamo says:

These Pretzels have destroyed my weight loss program until I can no longer find them.

  17. RosieRoe says:

I had these before X-mas at a children’s birthday party, I was watching people stand around the food table but constantly hoovering over a bowl of star shaped covered pretzels, to my curiosity I thought how good could these things be? so I walked by and tried 1, I could not believe these were AaaMAZINGGG!! I vowed to find the bag at Costco, unfortunately every time I went I never found them, till today… a week after New Years, I went into Costco for misc crap and I walked by some chips and their they were, a 1lb bag of Rold Gold pretzels for $2.97, thats right folks $2.97, with that said I bought 2 bags, thinking of going back for more 🙂

  18. Lynn says:

Well, it is getting close to that time again, although I know of them now, so I am encouraging my daughter-in-law to search for them early….yes, the damn’d Rold Gold peppermint snowflakes. I don’t have it bad for them enough to pay $16+ a bag on a major website, but I do have a bottle of peppermint oil to get my sensories going. Anyone to report any sightings?

  19. dbphillips says:

Sighted in Issaquah Costco, but don’t go there. I only got 5 and need to go back for more!

  20. pam says:

I found a large bag at Everett Costco. My family loved them. Trying to find a recipe to make my own.

  21. txbaby says:

I’m not a huge peppermint fan so I wouldn’t have bought or eaten these on my own. My aunt works for Frito Lay and decided to send me some of their test batch chips and treats… and these were by far my favorite. 🙂

  22. Sally says:

Dear lord these are delicious. My university roommate bought these for me because she said the peppermint would help me get through exams! She was right! I am definitely going to gain the freshman 15 now but they are so good I’ve been snacking on these through the studying for Bio, Chem, Physics and Calculus finals!!:D

  23. nollinjhwy says:

I’m on the phone with Frito Lay right now – flood them with calls 800/352-4477

  24. Lady Lillie says:

Where oh where are the pretzels. Costco said they are all out and won’t be getting any more. We went to Trader Joe’s and they are out of Pumpkin Butter and won’t be getting any more. Do we have to shop for Christmas goodies in November? This is very sad indeed, thought we were going to have those pretzels with some of our 38 grandchildren.

  25. nollinjhwy says:

I drove around all weekend looking for these. I even called Frito Lay – they said Walgreens and Walmart. Whre junkfoodguy?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Nollinjhwy – saw them locally here in DC in Giant food grocery, Safeway grocery, AND Walgreens. Also saw them in big bags at Costco

  26. bbb says:

I bought a bag at Costco San Marcos, CA (San Diego). The bag is 26 oz (1 lb. 10oz.) for $6.95. I thought it was a good have-on-hand-for Christmas thing, but it won’t last that long~

  27. Steph says:

Amazingly yummy, so good!!!!!!! I’m pretty sure any weight I put on this holiday will be due to these delectable pretzels! I saw that Trader Joe’s has something similiar, but I haven’t tried them yet. I kind of don’t want to as I will probably become addicted to those as well.

  28. Nats says:

They are FABULOUS!! But since the rest of the world has discovered that fact, they are SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE! Come on Rold Gold–I understand supply and demand but people are still DEMANDING!!! If anyone has seem them in Las Vegas let me know! The Frito Lay website says Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Costco, 7-Eleven all carry them–I’ve called 15 stores and no dice. I’m obsessed, I know!

  29. Becki Williams says:

You can find them online at amazon.com but it’ll cost you!! $20 for a 26oz bag !!! HOWEVER, they’re worth it! Probably the BEST snack I’ve ever eaten & I’ve eaten quite a few in my 66 yrs!! Great job, Rold Gold!! More, more, more…!!

  30. Allyn HOward says:

I was searching (with no luck) for Milano peppermint cookies. Saw these peppermint pretzels and thought,”Awww what the heck. It will subdue my peppermint cookie type craving.” Not only did it subdue it, I could not care less about the Milano cookies! These pretzels are fantastic! Worth every penny!

  31. Janet D says:
