New! Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins & Random Sunday Thoughts on The Hunger Games

Junk Food Nation, it’s a lazy Sunday, so I thought I’d just throw you some lazy thoughts about The Hunger Games:

1) So the Junk Food Gal and I saw The Hunger Games last night.  Neither of us had read the books, but damnit, now we have too!  Whereas we entered the movie thinking, “Let’s see what all the fuss is about,” we left the movie dazed, heart pounding, and needing to hit the nearest Barnes & Noble.  Damnit Young Adult books! You always rope me in! I admit, during the movie I felt like I threw up a little in my mouth due to the intensity of it.  #imagrownman

2) Is it me, or does Jennifer Lawrence look like a much hotter, less crazy version of Renee Zellweger? You be the judge.

3) Have you ever been so wrapped up in a movie that you actually left the movie thinking, “I’ve never been so glad THAT reality doesn’t exist!” I felt that way about the Hunger Games, and generally I don’t feel that way.  Even when I watched The Matrix, I was like, “Cool, I get to learn Kung Fu!” Here, I thought, “If I ever have to eat a BBQ-ed squirrel, please let there be Frank’s Red Hot nearby.”

4) Actually, I’ll just answer 2) for you. The answer is, yes – it’s not just me.

Anyways, today’s junk food: Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins!

The Money Shot

I was tipped off to these new Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins by fellow tweeter King Rhino (@KingRhino) again.  I’ve had Newtons Fruit Thins before, and reviewed their Chocolate Raspberry variety in the past. I really enjoy these Fruit Thins, and I love lemon, so I was excited to find these at my local Safeway foodmart.

Lemony Freshness

Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins are not on the Newtons website yet, but I’m sure they will be eventually. I love the idea of finally going to lemon with the Newtons – who doesn’t want a crispy cookie that can ALSO act as a palette cleanser (or something like that?)

Dried lemon peel, eh?

Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins contain dried lemon peel, which makes sense.  I use lemon zest in my cooking, so I understand the strength of flavor that exists in lemon peel.  Lemon pits are too mushy anyways.

Refreshing and verbose

Come to think of it, I can’t really think of another lemon-y cookie except for these Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins and those $1.00 packs of Archway Frosty Lemon cookies.  And damnit, I love those too!  These can’t be bad, then, right?

The inaugural row

Big chunks of lemon peel

Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins are wide flat crispy cookies.  As you can see from the pic above, the cookies have bits of lemon peel embedded into the surface.

Fruitcake-like

Up close, you can kind of see the candied nature of the lemon peel in these Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins. I’m curious to see how the taste is here…

Plenty of peel per bite

I took a bite of one of these Lemon Crisp Newtons Fruit Thins, and chewed. The cookie dough of the Fruit Thins exuded the essence of lemon – it was all very citrusy and oat-y. Good crunch and good texture to the Fruit Thin, too. Every couple of chews, my teeth would sink into something a bit firmer, yet still soft – the lemon peel.  As I bit into the lemon peel, the lemon-y taste got stronger, but not necessarily sweeter.  All in all the taste of the lemon was present, but not overpowering.  A good balance of sugar and lemon in this Fruit Thin made these cookies taste sweet yet still feel – well – healthy.  Which was nice, I must admit.  Good stuff, here, Newtons!

  1. Oh I didn’t realize they still made those Frosty Lemon cookies! I was always such a sucker for those. 🙂

    Hunger Games!!!

Wanted to like these, but at least in the bag I got the lemon is like little pebbles, barely chewable and usually preceded by a tooth-aching “ow! what the he- oh, yeah, the lemon bits” moment.

@Dana: I do hear you on the hard bits feeling like pebbles – But I still devoured them. Also, these Fruit Thins are deceiving – I don’t even think of them as cookies when I’m on my way to eating 10 straight

I love those Fruit Thins! The lemon ones were the first ones I tried but the chocolate raspberry ones are yummy too. I thought they looked weird when they first came out but now I really like them. 🙂 I think the chocolate ones would make a good cheesecake crust. The lemon ones would too.

Me and my dog have a morning tradition of biscuits and coffee (as a typical Golden Retriever she gets decaf, of course – wink). She gets 1/4 of a graham cracker in little pieces that she has to chase around the living room. I get an English oat biscuit to dunk. Just discovered the Newtons Lemon Fruit Thins and I’m in love! Dunk’em in your morning coffee – it softens the peel a bit. Mmmm.
