New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread and Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread & Olympic Terrordrome…I mean, Velodrome

Junk Food Nation, Happy Sunday to you.  First, I’m trying a few new things on this site as a result of the recent TWO QUESTION survey I posted over on SurveyMonkey.  if you haven’t answered my survey yet, please do!  It’ll help me out a lot.  And it will literally take 3 minutes, if that.  Click here to take the Survey.

One of the things I’ve added are at the end of each post, I’ve given you a way to Tweet, Pin, Like, etc. each individual page post directly to your social networks.  So socialize away!

I was watching Olympics, because apparently it’s my job now since I have been watching them 24/7, and on the TV came the sport that every Olympics, I am bewildered by: Terrodrome.  No, not Velodrome.  I refuse to call it by its given name.  I call it Terrordrome.  Because the sport looks like something out of Bladerunner:

That clip is not from these Olympics, but you get the point.  Men or women on weird bicycles, wearing futuristic pointy helmets, racing at lightning speeds around a bowl-like wooden track, chasing another team down as they go round and round and round.  Is this some pre-cursor to the light cycles in Tron??? Am I watching some kind of torture game from the future where people are half man/half bicycle, like the Wheelers in Return of Oz (HORRIFYING)?  Why does everyone look like they are from a Devo video???

Anyways, as I watched Velod…I mean Terrordrome again over the weekend, I was convinced that it was, by far, the weirdest sport of the Olympics.  Not trampolining.  Not rhythm gymnastics.  Terrordrome.  I always watch it with a quizzical look on my face.  W. T. F.

Today’s junk food: New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread and Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread!  This one is for you, Michelle Li!

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread and Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread: The Money Shots

My friend Michelle recently Pinned this to her Pinterest, so i knew I had to review this for her.  Ok, full disclosure, these reviews were coming anyways.  New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread and Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread has been reviewed by a few of my fellow bloggers over at Serious Eats, the Impulsive Buy, and Foodette Reviews. When i finally spotted it at my local Giant Grocery, I thought “Jif trying to get into the Nutella game….Nice.  I wonder how it stacks up?” Because I AM a Nutella lover, and could eat buckets of the stuff.  Not even on bread.  With my paw, like I’m Winnie the Pooh.  Learn all about these on the Jif website.

Let’s start with Jif’s Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread – the one likely most like Nutella:

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread: The Money Shot

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread: 230 calories for 2 tablespoons is more than in a serving of peanut butter…but this has chocolate in it, so I’m surprised its not more.

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread: Lots of “May contains” here.  Definitely not for people with nut allergies.

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread: It was weird how the surface had a “skin” that cracked as I pierced it.  Inside – smooth consistency.

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread: Luscious and easy to spread.

New Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread tasted, to me, exactly like Nutella.  As soon as I screwed off the cap and tore off the paper seal, I could smell that familiar chocolate hazelnut smell i’ve come to love with Nutella.  When I tasted it, there was the wonderful taste of chocolate and the rich roasted flavor of hazelnut.  In fact, I might actually say this tastes even more chocolatey than Nutella.  Nutella might have a deeper cocoa taste ultimately, but this spread definitely tasted of chocolate first to me; hazelnuts second.  I might say this tasted a little sweeter than Nutella as well, although i didn’t have any for a side by side compare.

Some have said this spread more like frosting than Nutella; that the consistency was looser.  I agree to an extent, but I think the gloppiness of this spread matched Nutella pretty spot on – just a LITTLE bit looser.  Overall, loved it.  Definitely would buy this again!

Onto the New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread!

New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread: The Money Shot

New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread: Most of the same ingredients here as in the regular hazelnut version – must be the natural flavors which are different.

New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread: Again with the surface and the weird skin!  On the other hand, I rather enjoy things like pudding skin (such an old reference), so….no worries.

New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread: Also very gloppy – and full of coffee taste!

New Jif Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spread smelled like cappuccino as soon as I opened the jar! Now I don’t drink coffee.  But the Junk Food Gal, an AVID coffee drinker, upon smelling and tasting this spread, said with wide eyes: “IT TASTES LIKE CAPPUCCINO.”  That’s all I needed to know as far as how “coffee” this spread tasted.

Strangely – the consistency of this spread seemed firmer than the plain Chocolate Hazelnut. But the flavor was out of this world.  As soon as I tasted it, the flavor of coffee beans/mocha/cappuccino filled my mouth and nostrils.  Very strong flavor in that department.  Then the chocolate hazelnut flavor came through in the end as the coffee flavor faded.  After I swallowed, the coffee-like taste remained in my mouth and lingered.  Very cool.

For people who like cappuccinos, you’ll like this spread – the roasted coffee-like taste is nailed, and you’ll definitely enjoy having some toast with your coffee if its spread with this.

So there you have it, Junk Food Nation!  Two spreads, two thumbs up, and a belly full of Hazelnut.

The coffee spread bugs me. I just can’t see many purposes for it at all. Though maybe adding it to oatmeal would make for a cool combination.

I just noticed that milk and hazelnuts are the only thing bolded in the ingredient list. I’ve never seen that before and all I can come up with is for allergen reasons but even that doesn’t fully make sense. Does the jar give any explanation?

I have been very interested in trying the cap flavor, but I love peanut butter so much better than any other spread. Have u ever tried white chocolate peanut butter from the Peanut butter & co. Its pretty damn good. I want to try there maple flavor, but unable to find it in stores.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: I have NOT had the white chocolate version yet, but I will definitely have to buy some soon! AND maple flavor??? What have I been missing??? Thanks for heads up

  4. Will says:

They have a bunch of other flavors too. They Have a flavor called the heat is on, which has cayenne pepper, chili powder, & some other stuff. It’s pretty good, but not great. It’s not really spicy for me, I eat habeneros every day. The cinnamon raisin is very good too.

    • Nick Rovo says:

White chocolate wonderful is just as its name states, wonderful. Bah I forgot about how good their peanut butters are. Excuse me while I go take a trip to the grocery store…

    • junkfoodguy says:

      @Nick: I know, right? I’ll drive

    • DiamondNDarkness says:

      Will,

I love the Cinnamon Raisin flavor! Thanks for sharing about ‘The Heat is On’ kind; I’m dying to try it based on what you said. I love spicy things, so I’m now curious how my heat tolerance would compare.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: Ok, unfair. Now I gotta go get me some. Cinnamon raisin?! Absurd!

I love Nutella! I bought a store-brand version of Nutella the other day that was only $1.99 but I got what I paid for, because it was so oily. I wasn’t allowed to eat the Jif brand of peanut butter as a kid, so I might just have to try this, along with the original Jif, to feel like a badass 🙂

  6. Will says:

@jfg, check out that orange shake on second scoop. Very horrifying, makes me think twice to have a fast food shake. WTF!!

  7. Will says:

OMG jfguy! I NEVER liked Nutella. But this stuff ROCKS! I only just now, 3/21/13, heard about it. And I didn’t know they had the cappuccino stuff either! Love it!!!! Maybe the market is a little slower to come around here in Florida? All I know is I’m hooked. I loved your comment about “…eating it with your paw, Winnie the Pooh style…” Thanks for your post, I pinned it. 🙂

Try this with either new chocolate jif! Sweet Pizza
1 pizza dough recipe (makes 4 small pizzas)
    2/3 cup chocolate jif
    8 oz mascarpone
    3/4 cup walnuts, chopped
    1/3 cup honey

Preheat oven on highest heat with a pizza stone for at least an hour. Bake one stretched pizza dough on the floured pizza peel (or a floured baking sheet if you don’t have one) for 8 minutes.  While it’s still warm, smooth about 3 tablespoons of nutella onto the pizza, covering the whole thing, save a 1/2 inch around the edge. Top with a quarter of the mascarpone (there should be a lot of space around each slice).  Sprinkle with about 3 tablespoons of walnuts and drizzle with some honey.  Slice and enjoy!

I probably would not have tried Jif Chocolate Hazelnut if I had not been given a jar at the food pantry when I was out of food. They told me to spread it on bread. I did, and I loved it! I love chocolate and especially like the old fashioned kind that one cooks. It, too, has a skin on top.

I finished the jar and put in in Oatmeal and on tortillas. Not wanting to waste any, I filled the nearly empty jar with Cocoa Krispies cereal and milk and stirred it till not a drop remained.

As soon as I have money I will buy another jar, and if the price is right will try Mocha Cappucino.
