Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips & I AM ALL-IN WITH AARON RODGERS

Junk Food Nation, get ready to sports nerd it up.  Around this time last year, I talked about Fantasy Football, and why it’s crucial to only play in ONE fantasy football league.  I tried to be funny about, but the real reason is simple – with one fantasy team, you’re already sometimes rooting against your own real-life interests; with two, you have conflicting players on both teams AND your own real life interests?  More than two fantasy teams?  What, do you hate yourself?

So what’d I do this year? I broke my own rule and joined two leagues.  And in both leagues, I snagged Aaron Rodgers as my top pick:

12 Team League, 6 Pts. for Passing TDs, Non-PPR

QB: Aaron Rodgers
RB: Trent Richardson
RB: Fred Jackson
FLEX: Adrian Peterson
WR: Antonio Brown
WR: Torrey Smith
TE: Jimmy Graham
K: Matt Prater
DEF: Green Bay

14 Team League, 4 Pts for Passing TDs, 1/2-pt PPR

QB: Aaron Rodgers
RB: DeMarco Murray
RB: Isaac Redman
FLEX: Cedric Benson
WR: Jordy Nelson
WR: Santonio Holmes
TE: Jermichael Finley
K: Robbie Gould
DEF: Seattle

I didn’t bother listing all my bench players, because I want people to keep reading this blog.  But clearly the first team is much better than the second.  Not only because it had fewer owners, making it easier to draft, but also because during my second team’s draft, my computer kept freaking out and selecting players I didn’t even want.  #makingexcuses #ihateyahoo #throwschair

Anyways, back to my original point. At least if I was going to have to root for two fantasy teams against my own Buffalo Bills real-life interest, I wanted to have SOME consistency.  Nabbing Rodgers with my top spot took care of that.  So, for this season, I am all-in for Buffalo, and (apparently) Green Bay.  Go…Packers?

Of course, after I’d drafted four Green Bay players in my draft last night, a friend quipped “Have fun with that game where they lose 20-9.”  Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

By the way, I’ve had an ASTOUNDING number of entries for the Brownie Brittle contest!  and some of you have been tweeting MULTIPLE times – love it.  Keep it going!  Only six days left.

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips!

. Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips: The Money Shot

I wanted these Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips ever since I read the review on The Impulsive Buy.  I love onions and use them in all my cooking, I love Sour Cream and Onion Chips, and I had a feeling I’d like these.  I mean, c’mon now.

PURPLE!

Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips are not listed on the Frito-Lay website yet, but I’m sure with enough feedback, they might keep this flavor around.  I like how they put the limited edition tag in a little flag in the corner.  Why not SPLASH THAT across the front of the bag?

Thyme…mmmmm

Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips feature thyme as the highlighted spice on the front of the bag.  I love thyme.  #drooling

160 cal per serving

Standard ingredients

Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips are blasted with onion powder and sugar.  Sounds like a plan to me!

Standard look

I opened the bag and sniffed: unmistakable smell of cooked sweet onions and thyme.  Dead on.  I loved it.  And there really is nothing like a Lay’s chip – it’s so thin and crispy.  I like kettle chips and crunchy crunchy chips…but sometimes there’s something special about those perfectly thinly sliced and seasoned chips.  Frito-Lay has it ON LOCK.

Thyme everywhere!

Limited Edition Lay’s Sweet Onion Potato Chips were REALLY REALLY GOOD.  I’ve giving a big endorsement if you like onions, which I know some people don’t (I think you’re crazy, but still, I know some people don’t).

Basically, these taste like perfectly caramelized sweet onions.  The mix of salt and pepper and thyme and sweet onion gives this a really savory taste.  If I thought about it, I could see how close these tasted to Sour Cream and Onion chips, but this chip lacks the creaminess of the other.  Nope, these are just sweet onion and thyme flavor to the max.  They reminded me a lot of the Caramlised Onion & Balsamic Vinegar chips I got in Ireland, but without the sour sting. There’s a LITTLE tang, but not much.

These will make your breath smell, but you’ll love the flavor.  Buy these.

  1. I *love* sweet onion chips! There’s a Hawaiian chip company I usually get – in a purple bag – can’t remember the name. I guess Lay’s was tired of losing business to them and came out with these…

Still looking for that Ben & Jerry’ s Key Lime ice cream!

    • Shorneys says:

That Hawaiian chip company? They’re called Hawaiian Brand Snacks, and JFG reviewed their Luau BBQ chips last year. Link.

I liked the Lays sweet onion chips, but they’re too herby. A nice underpinning of thyme would have been fine, but this came a little too close to that one instance of my mixing up tablespoons and teaspoons and putting in a full tablespoon of dried thyme into my food. I little too much, I think. Good flavor though.

ps. You freaking out over autodrafting players was HILARIOUS.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys: strange, these didn’t taste that much of Thyme. I wonder if they scaled it back for this version – they had released sweet onion chips before.

    • Shorneys says:

@JFG: I tasted these on this go-around, and they’re very heavy on the thyme. It’s a flavor that builds though, and maybe I wasn’t supposed to eat half the bag in one sitting.

    • junkfoodguy says:

      @Shorneys: yep, prob not

  2. Albany Dana says:

Am I missing something with that “do usa flavor” thing on there? What does that even mean? I’ve avoided these out of fear of the unknown, but maybe I’ll take a chance on a bag, I like onion-y chips.

Slimmed down to 3 fantasy leagues this year with work league draft tonight – random draft order already set and I got the first pick and I’m all in with you – Aaron Rodgers all the way – in 6 pt/TD leagues it’s not even worth thinking about anyone else.

    Dude, Santonio Holmes?? *snort*

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dana: LOL, It’s “Do Us A Flavor”, and it’s part of their new naming contest. Not Do “USA Flavor.”

And I knoooooooooooooooooooooooow re: Holmes – I threw up all over my keyboard when I picked him.

  3. Chip Review says:

Teresapalooza!! – Hawaiian Snacks – Sweet Maui Onion (we like them too)

We can’t seem to find these Lay’s anywhere…..Chicago area anyone?? By JFG’s description of these, we better start looking harder!!!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@ChipReview: Yeah, who knows where they are being distributed. I STILL can’t find the Hot Wings JACKED Doritos, and fear they are GONE

  4. Dr. Stanley Goodspeed says:

Trent Richardson? I hope your team gets to play Troy State this season…

  5. Will says:

That’s why I dont play fantasy football because I can’t route for other teams. Aaron Rodgers is a real nice pick though. You know he will bring you a lot of points. Hes has all the tools or a qb, good luck!

  6. Jen says:

I alo got Aaron Rodgers this year, and drafted CJ Spiller just so I could have some skin in the game as I watched. I’m vowing to be a much better Bills fan this year. Did you know they;re predicted to go 8-8? That’s not embarassing!

  7. Nick Rovo says:

Ahh I forgot to even make a team this year. Must find a league to join that actually has people I know. Maybe next year we should set up some sort of blogger league;]
