Review: White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s & I……Don’t Love Candy Corn / Crowdsourcing Candy Corn Oreo Reviews

Junk Food Nation, I am not a huge fan of candy corn.  I’m not going to come right out and say I HATE candy corn, because inevitably someone in my office has a big bowl or jar of it on their desk, and I’ll find myself absentmindedly eating handful after handful of it until my insides are coated with wax.  That’s fun, later, in the bathroom.

People LIKE candy corn, I think, because the distinct flavor reminds them of a certain time of year: Halloween and Fall.  And I like that too, I just can’t get over the fact that it feels like I’m chewing candles and tastes like pure sugar.  I dunno.  I’m never giving my kids this stuff.

As I noted over the weekend, Nabisco announced it would be releasing Candy Corn Oreos in Target stores on today, and a bunch of you, even within the past hour, have tweeted, Facebooked, texted and emailed me about these.  Now, given the fact that (1) I don’t love candy corn, and (2) it will be unlikely for me to get to a Target immediately after they hit shelves, I’m turning to YOU to tell me how they are!

Run to Target and buy these!

You’ll notice that big yellow picture on the right hand side of the webpage.  Click it, or keep reading.  I wanna hear from YOU!  I mean, these are on shelves RIGHT NOW, so take pictures and tweet me @junkfoodguy.  Or upload some pics to my Facebook Page.  Or email me junkfoodguy@junkfoodguy.com with YOUR review of the product.  Like I said on Saturday, let’s crowdsource YOUR input on these, and I’ll post some of the best pics and reviews to the blog over the next week – this is YOUR chance to be on here!  Sigh, I know I’m not offering a prize, so just think of this as me asking YOU for a favor until I can try these.  Thanks :) – I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

In the spirit of that, today’s junk food: White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s!

White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s: The Money Shot

White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s were brought to my attention by the guys over at On Second Scoop.  Apparently, this candy has been around for a while – Candyblog discussed them last year – but I had never heard of them.  Well, I needed to rectify that IMMEDIATELY, so I strolled down to my local Walgreens and snagged a bag.

Very Halloweeny

Nice use of the piece of Candy Corn as the A in the title. Pulling out all the design stops for these White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s.

Just exploiting the M&M characters

White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s come in yellow, orange and white pieces.  By the way, I never noticed – these M&M characters wear white sneakers?  With tread on the bottom?  How have I not been paying attention to this?

220 cal per

White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s are 220 calories per bag, making them only slightly healthier than ACTUAL candy corn.

Pretty

White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s were a little thicker than regular M&Ms.  Took me a damn while to find a yellow one, too!  As soon as I ripped open the bag, the smell of REALLY sweet, almost frosting-like confection filled the air.  If I thought of it one way, I could say it smelled heavily of white chocolate…but if I focused, I could say it was the distinct smell of candy corn.

White on the inside!

I crunched these White Chocolate Candy Corn M&M’s, and I must say, I found them to be fairly accurate when it came to matching the flavor of candy corn.  The shell was crunchy, and the inside chocolate had that creamy white chocolate taste that also was spiked with candy corn flavor.  There’s really not much else to say – these tasted like white chocolate mixed with candy corn.  It had that sickeningly sweet flavor.  Boom.

Will you like these? If you like candy corn, I’m gonna say yes.  Me? Being not a huge fan of candy corn, I certainly liked these BETTER than candy corn…and given the option between these and actual candy corn, I’ll go with these any day.  But between these and regular M&Ms, normal M&Ms it is!  Still, this is an interesting treat – give them a try, and let me know what YOU think.

PURCHASED AT: Walgreens!

COST: $0.69 (or 3 for $2.00)

Unlike Dubba who isn’t a fan of these, I actually really like them. My only complaint is that the shells are kind of oily. I’m not sure if that’s the best word to describe the hand-feel but something just makes them feel greasy. I also didn’t know they came in single serve bags. My friend got me one of the medium sized bags so now I have a good amount to last me awhile.

I bought a bag of the candy corn M&Ms last October and took my time eating them. Not to mention I also bought Brach’s autumn mix candy corn. Why confine to Halloween? Just as good to have around Thanksgiving!

  3. Kahnfucius says:

Do you believe, as I do, that each colored segment of a candy corn tastes slightly different? It is this faith which makes me eat them colored layer by colored layer.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Kahn: When I was a kid, I DID believe each layer was different! Great callback

I eat candy corn by layers, too. I always start with the tip. A gourmet market near me has blackberry cobbler candy corn in bulk. It’s purple and so much better than the regular stuff. Brach’s makes the best regular candy corn and pumpkins.

@Kaden GM: BLACKBERRY CANDY CORN!? #mindblown

Lewis Black agrees with you about candy corn. Check out his rant on the topic here. NSFW, because seriously, it’s Lewis Black.

I happen to agree with him as well. Candy corn can kiss my ass.

At Target tonight, there was an Oreo display by the registers, but only some boring varieties obviously moved to fill empty space where a sticker read ‘candycorn oreo’. So, no go here, yet.

Love…love…love the white chocolate M&M’s. They are hard to find here…lots of empty cases at Walmart, so someone got there before me & likes them too. I tried them last year & hoped they be back this year. I will say that you can get them online but not at a fair price 🙁

My one year old nephew accidentally stole a bag of this recently, and I wish to god it was a single serving bag. Unfortunately it was one of those one-pound bags. I’m neither a white chocolate fan, nor a candy corn fan, so I was about to walk back into Target and admit to aiding and abetting, but I decided to try it, just to say I tried it. I could only eat one, and that was tough. These M&Ms are sick, and not in a good way. I’m going to take the bag to work, where we have two high school kids and some college students with iron stomachs made in Taiwan working. They will eat anything free, especially things made of sugar, so I should be able to get rid of these in a little under an hour.

I bought the white chocolate candy corn M&M’s out of curiosity. I am so glad I did. They’re awesome. The white chocolate reminds me a bit of those addictive Lindor truffles. I don’t taste any candy corn flavor, just the colors, and yes, the shells are definitely a bit oily. I just tested them under a good light. I do like the dark chocolate M&M’s and the dark raspberry is probably my favorite, but these white chocolate ones are great. I’ll have to keep an eye out for more since I have just learned they are hard to find. Rats. Wish they’d make them year round.

Not a fan of any kind of candy corn, corn pops, Sugar Smacks, corn nuts or anything like that, myself. Corn is not candy to my way of thinking–except for popcorn, of course.

I searched out this JFG article though, because I am interested to see any kind of M&M’s reviewed, particularly interested in seeing M&M’s Peanut Butter flavor reviewed. I infer from the above paragraphs that they met with approval here on this site.

Accidentally tried them myself this year (one of only two new candies I’ve sampled in at least five years I reckon) and I found them great! Vast improvement over normal M&Ms –and they even put Reese’s Pieces to shame. Blows Reese’s away, as far as I’m concerned. (Reese’s Pieces always slightly-disappointed me, because the portion is never enough per bag and also, each piece is so tiny).

So, M&M’s PB is my new candy-of-choice for my daily lunch pail.

What was the other newish candy bar I gambled on? New Peanut Butter Snickers. Again, a win the PB way. ‘Standard’ Snickers is too caramel-gummy and too-sweet nougat. But Snickers PB (‘SPB’) is a treat.
