Review: Lay’s Buffalo Wings with Ranch Stax & NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY!
Junk Food Nation, Retro Cereal Week continues! As I mentioned yesterday, this is a week-long collaboration between myself, Rodzilla Reviews, The Impulsive Buy, Foodette Reviews, and Food Junk. Today, DAY 2, Rodzilla Reviews takes on a 12-year old classic – Cheerios MillenniOs!
There seems to be a national holiday for all foods, doesn’t there? One day its National Sushi Day, the next its National Donut Day, and today, Junk Food Nation, is NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY! Locally, some joints are having burger eating contests to celebrate the occasion. This news story provides a few deals happening around the country to celebrate the holiday. Some establishments are even giving out free burgers if your last name is, indeed, “Burger.” And this blog has already talked about the newest Limited Edition Cheeseburger Pringles that are in stores now.
So go forth and eat burgers, Nation! I know *I* will. And here’s a question for the comment section below: What’s YOUR favorite fast food burger? Me? In N Out usually takes the cake, but I must admit I have a soft spot for a Wendy’s $1 Junior Bacon with Cheese….MMMMMM.
Moving on. Today’s junk food: Lay’s Buffalo Wings with Ranch Stax! These chips were brought to my attention by loyal reader Neil, who took some pictures of this flavor a few weeks ago and emailed them to me:
He said they were at Walmart, but I couldn’t find them anywhere! Honestly, I was planning on just doing a review based solely on Neil’s great photos. That all, changed, however, when I went to Walmart recently and BAM – there they were! I do love buffalo wing snacks, so why not? I’d seen buffalo wing and blue cheese snacks in the past, but I must admit – this may mark the first time I’d seen a RANCH and buffalo mixed snack. So, let’s give these Lay’s Buffalo Wings with Ranch Stax a shot, shall we?
Lay’s Buffalo Wings with Ranch Stax were not what I expected. When I first crunched into them, I tasted the tang of the buffalo sauce, but more than that, I tasted…could it be CHICKEN??? For some reason, and maybe it’s the presence of chicken fat, these REALLY reminded me of the chicken flavor in Walkers Roast Chicken Potato Crisps. The aftertaste was definitely chicken! Big win.
The creamy ranch flavor emerged quickly and mixed in with the tang of the sauce and the chicken flavor. The resultant flavor was, indeed, the flavor of buffalo wing mixed with ranch. When I licked the chip’s flavor powder individually, the STRONG flavor of buffalo sauce came through – but when I chewed the chip, the buffalo flavor was much more subtle. The strong crunch of the Stax was nice, and I appreciated the strong potato flavor. Good burn at the end.
I was originally on the fence with these…they tasted almost more like a spicy ranch than a buffalo wing chip. However, the more I ate them, and the more I tasted that great chicken flavor, the more I liked these. They tasted pretty good, but just were not the flavor profile I was expecting – in a good way. NOT your typical buffalo wing chip. They were better.
PURCHASED AT: Walmart
COST: $1.18

Yes, it’s all about the Double Double Animal Style Cheeseburger from In-N-Out! I’ll be getting one later today to celebrate! 🙂
@Teresapalooza: AH! JEALOUS!
I’m with you both on the In-N-Out. Can’t be touched.
@Rodzilla: It’s magic at a great price
Never had a chance to Try in-n-out. I have never tried 5 guys either. I have a few 5 guys near me at least.
@Will: 5 Guys main benefit is the customization. I am a fan
As far as chain burger joints, 5 Guys can’t be beat in our opinion (their fries…yum).
We just had to come back to this post today because we picked up a bag of tasty chips today and it made us think that you have had to have tasted them before, and in which case, the chip above are not the first/only buffalo/ranch combo chips you’ve tasted.
Tell us you’ve tried Doritos – Blazin’ Buffalo and Ranch?? The bright, light blue bag.
@ChipReview: Love 5 Guys too. I just like In-N-Out a litttttttle better 😉
And the Doritos Blazin Buffalo and Ranch I have tried before – like them! Not my favorite bag of Buffalo Chips, but def a good chip
I just found these at Walmart and they’re now my favorite chips, replacing Ruffles Buffalo Wings ones. Try them using cottage cheese as a dip. HEAVENLY!
@Kaylakaze: NICE. Never thought of dipping them in cottage cheese until now. NEED TO TRY THAT
These disappeared from my Walmart for a long time and I thought they’d been discontinued, but now with football season, they’re back!! I may have to buy a couple of cases to get me through the months after football season.
@Kayla: Definitely do it! Stax have quietly been ascending my snack charts
