Review: Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos (Previously Discontinued!) & The Winner of the Justin’s Candy Contest Is…
Junk Food Nation, I am exhausted. After attending a reception for the Metro Cooking DC Show where I got 15 lbs of goodies, watching the 2nd Presidential Debate and the Yankees/Tigers game, all the while catching up with a college friend and cleaning my apartment, I am ready for a normal busy day at work. #somebodyslapme
By the way, if anyone wants to see what I looked like when I was a tot, check out the October 16, 2012 post on this tumblr – no joke, that’s me! (I submitted it weeks ago).
Let’s get to the winner of my Justin’s Candy contest! With over 200 entries, this was my biggest contest yet. A big thank you to Justin’s Nut Butter for making this happen. And thanks to all of you who participated. Using the random number generator at Random.org, I assigned every entry a number, clicked the button, and found my winner:

Onto today’s junk food: Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos!
So when I saw these Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos at Walmart, I was intrigued…these were new but seemed very familiar. VERY familiar. Had I seen these before? So I went researching, and found out…I HAD SEEN THESE BEFORE!
According to Wiki, these were a flavor of Fritos that existed back in the late 80’s to late 90’s…and they had a HUGE following! There’s a Facebook Group asking for these to come back. My friend over at the Fat Guy Food Blog has stated these are his favorite chips ever. Discussion boards have begged for them to return. They are listed on Discontinued Food lists. But…..here they are! BACK IN ACTION! At Walmart 🙂
I’m guessing these Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos are good, because there wouldn’t be such a crazy following if they were awful. No one is saying, BRING BACK THOSE CANDY CORN OREOS…yet.
The Junk Food Gal saw this back and looked skeptical, “How can something be both Wild AND Mild? What are you up to, Fritos?”
I like corn chips generally, but I haven’t actually reviewed ANY Fritos flavors on this blog. Honestly, it’s because they haven’t (as far as I’ve seen), come out with anything NEW in a long time. So the move to bring back these Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos is a big step.
When hunger strikes, I eat multiple sandwiches…but I guess I could be convinced to eat these.
You know what also satisfies? Sandwiches. Multiple.
When I opened the bag of these Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos, I couldn’t really smell much. They just smelled like corn chips. I inhaled DEEPLY, and tried not to pass out. I GUESS I smelled a little ranch, but I think my mind was playing tricks on me.
I munched on a big mouthful of these Limited Edition Wild n’ Mild Ranch Fritos and the verdict – hmmmmmmm not bad! Not bad at all, Fritos.
Here’s the thing – it is just a corn chip with a moderate amount of ranch flavoring. Unlike Ranch Corn Nuts or even Cool Ranch Doritos, the Ranch flavor here is not a powder sprinkled on top…the seasoning seems to be woven INTO the Fritos Corn Chip. The seasoning is NOT overwhelming – there is definite ranch flavoring, but for anyone looking for their tongue to be bitten with ranch tang, you’re gonna be disappointed.
That said, I can see why these were so popular. THEY ARE VERY EATABLE. Crunchier than Cool Ranch Doritos. Same HUGE corn taste that you find when you eat Corn Nuts (but not as tooth shattering). Not TOO much Ranch as to turn your stomach, and the smaller size chip means you can fit a WHOLE LOT into your mouth. Seriously. I can’t stop eating these.
All in all, a thumbs up – won’t knock your socks off, but understand the appeal. I personally really enjoyed these even if they weren’t a game changer.
And by the way, I found a YouTube review of these – and this guy’s kids are ADORABLE. Go watch it.
PURCHASED AT: Walmart

Yay, Asian bowl cut! 🙂 I love what she wrote about it too…
Haven’t had Fritos corn chips in a while – will have to try these!
@Teresapalooza: swag and confident at age 5?
Bowlcut Pride!
@Nick: YOU KNOW IT
My parents gave me one of those until I was able to decide what I actually wanted. I think that might explain why I let me hair grow out now=p
@Nick: I used to love the bowl cut – the only thing I didn’t like was how hot it’d get
God. I still remember Chili Cheese Fritos. I am *haunted* by them. Oart of me died (the fat part) when they discontinued them.
@Jen: Yeah but that fat part was quickly replaced by constant consumption of frozen pizza
If you posted ranch fritos on eBay, I would so buy them. They are my favorite and only come out every few years!
@Ed: HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM side business?
I think it could be a very profitable side business! I would glady pay extra to have them shipped to me. I checked my local Walmart and they did not have them.
Yum, can’t wait to try these!!
And, some sandwiches….. 🙂 We love them too!
@ChipReview: What chips do you like IN sandwiches? Becsides the classic potato chiP?
God I miss Sabrositas Fritos; those were the chili and lime ones. If they brought those back I would totally freak out!
@Garnetstar28: You know, I saw some of those Fritos when I was in California recently! I think…
Where are you located to find these? I just got back from a late night scrounge here in Texas and couldn’t find them. I’ve been absolutely obsessed with these for years. Please let me know! I’d even pay to have them mailed to me!
@Josh: Literally saw them this past Sunday at a Walmart up here. I don’t know why Fritos would only release them in one part of the country – they are pretty awesome.
Omg! Please tell me where you saw them! I live in the Bay Area near SF and would love to get my hands on them!
Anyone else find these? I’m dying to find them. I’ll literally pay someone money to mail me a couple of bags. I run the nostalgia website cmonfwank.com and have been dying for these to return for over a decade. I haven’t been able to find them here in Texas and am scared I’m going to miss the boat. Anyone want to make a couple bucks and help a brotha out? josh.yawn@gmail.com
@Josh – yeah sorry man – I would mail some to you but I haven’t been near that walmart in weeks.
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY’RE REALLY BACK?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
@FatGuy – yep – you best go find some
FOUND THEM! Bought two cases of them, so I have 32 boxes. If anyone needs them and doesn’t have them in their area, email me!
@Josh: WOW. TWO CASES!? You should tell the guys at FatGuyFoodBlog.com — it’s their favorite chip!
Hmmm… I’m a fool for ranch flavored chips. Might try a little bit of these.
@Miguel – yes, you totally should. I thought very good balance of flavor.
BRING BACK THOSE CHIPS!!! MY MOM AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THEM FOR 20 YEARS!!!
Dearest Miss Teresa Everett… Ask and ye shall receive! I think someone in Plano, TX is listening to you!! RANCH FRITOS ARE BAAAAAACK!!! Not only that, they don’t appear to be Limited-Edition, like the 2012 tease. Woohoo! However, Frito-Lay dropped the title “Wild & Mild” for the far less exciting sounding “Classic” – Really though, they could call them “Syphilis & Ebola Ranch Fritos” for all I care… just so long as they taste the same as the original recipe.
just found this post after looking for disappointing reviews of the aforementioned classic ranch fritos. let me be the first. me and a couple of friends have tried them. all of our opinions were that they had much less seasoning than the original ones from way back when.
we would love to hear anyone else’s comments on the classic ranch flavor.
cheers
