Review (x2!): New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies & Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies & ATARI BANKRUPT??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Junk Food Nation, four days ago, my childhood died.  Atari, the once video game giant, filed for bankruptcy.   The company that brought us Centipede, Asteroids…gone!  Damn.

Of course, kids these days (yes, I just said, “Kids these days”) see games like Pong and River Raid, and they laugh… “These graphics suck!” HOW ABOUT YOU SUCK, SPOILED BRATS.  I swear, with six year olds playing games on iPads and watching Honey Boo Boo, our society is moving towards Idiocracy faster each day. AND GET OFF MY LAWN, YOU SCOUNDRELS!

No, but seriously, I’m bummed about Atari going bankrupt. It was a company that so many Americans  grew up with, and it was a true pioneer that began the video game era as we know it.  I remember being a kid, playing Pacman over and over and over again using the single stick and red button joystick. I remember using a paddle with a wheel on it to play endless hours of Centipede and Breakout. THIS WAS SOPHISTICATED TECH, PEOPLE!  And now all I need to do to ROCK at Fruit Ninja is the swipe of my finger…sigh.

Adios, Atari. You will be missed.

Today’s junk food: New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies & Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies!

So I hadn’t been back to my local Walmart in a very long time, and finally had a chance to hop out there this past weekend.  I hoped to find some tasty Limited Edition-type goodies, and Walmart didn’t disappoint! They had, on huge display, a SLEW of New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Cookies:

Of course, these New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies & Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies were not the only flavor there.  Pepperidge Farm also had this flavor:

New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Caramel Apple Pie

I didn’t purchase these New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Caramel Apple Pie Cookies because I thought they’d taste EXACTLY LIKE the Pepperidge Farm Limited Edition Caramel Apple Pie Soft Dessert Cookies I had last September.  YOU CAN’T FOOL ME WITH A NEW BAG, PF!  Shamsters.

Anyways, I grabbed the two unfamiliar bags, and booked it out of there.  Let’s eat!

I love how the background had a tiny bowl of carrot shavings.  MMMM VEGGIES.

These New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies had the same LOOK as the Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies I had last fall, but when I opened the bag, there was not the same smell of cinnamon and spice that came out.

New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies: Big chunks of cream cheese chips

I took a big bite of one of these New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Carrot Cake Cookies and was pretty pleased…not blown away, but these were very good.  The taste of the cookie was like carrot cake, spot on.  It had that typically soft feeling, and that nice brown sugary – carrot cake taste.  I did not mistake this for pumpkin, and it wasn’t overwhelmed with cinnamon or molasses, etc.  This was a very simple caramel-y carrot cake flavor, done right.

Add on top of that the chips and pecans to round out that carrot cake flavor, and these were pretty accurate.  The Cream cheese chips were creamy and sweet, and the pecans weren’t big and annoying – they merely supplemented the flavor of the overall cookie.  Nice work here.

New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies: So doughy

When I opened this bag of New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies, my eyebrows were raised.  These smelled pretty good – nice chocolate smell – but where were the chips?  And why was there so much dough.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I took a big bite of these New Pepperidge Farm Dessert Shop Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies, and unlike the Carrot Cake cookies – I was EXTREMELY disappointed.  Here’s what I’ll say – to me these tasted like a very tasty and sweet chocolate chip cookie.  As a cookie, they were fine.  Absolutely fine.  But the bag says Dark Chocolate Cheesecake!  I wanted it to the same experience as the Pumpkin Cheesecake cookies, where the chips tasted like the cheesecake and the cookie itself helped add the spice and resembled the cheesecake crust.

The problem?  TOO MUCH CRUST.  I TOLD you these looked a little doughy, and I was right.  There was so much “cookie” in these cookies, that the cheesecake chips and the dark chocolate chunks were entirely overwhelmed.  I even did one of those sit with eyes closed and really think to see if I could taste the cheesecake – NOPE.  It really just tasted like a really doughy chocolate chip cookie.  I can’t even describe the flavor with more detail, because it’s unnecessary!  Boo.

Buy the Carrot Cake.  Leave the Dark Chocolate Cheesecake.

PURCHASED AT: Walmart

COST: $2.68 each (Walmart has some strange prices).

  1. You need to get your hands on one of those Atari Classic video game systems that come pre-loaded with like 35-40 games for nostalgic purposes. If you can’t find one, I’ve got one that I’d be willing to part with for a fair price. 🙂

    • junkfoodguy says:

@IE: I used to have one of those!!! Turns out, outside of a few games (Pacman, Centipede, Astroids, Donkey Kong, River Raid, Breakout), the rest of the games were pretty bad. Maybe THAT’S why Atari went under, lol

  2. Nick Rovo says:

I feel like the cheesecake cookie’s doughiness would work great for an ice cream sandwich;]

  3. Did you know that Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, also created Chuck E. Cheese? It’s true…

I’ll miss Atari too, though I won’t miss that hand cramp you’d get from using the joystick. Remember when THAT was the big issue that adults had with kids playing too many video games – bad posture and physical issues? I’m sure they’d trade that now for this gun violence discussion.

And yeah, I knew the Dark Chocolate Cheesecake would be a bust because *that’s not a thing!* People add dark chocolate in front of anything and think it makes a great flavor…ugh…

I use to love Atari. My favorite game was Indiana jones raiders of the lost ark. I remember at the end of the game u have to dig to get the ark. I was so excited I was going to win the game. Next thing I know I’m falling down the ditch and die. I was so upset, i ended up winning on my next try.

I’m going have to try those carrot cake cookies, they look good!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: RAIDERS! YEs, I totally remember the game. GET THE ANKH! Classic. Good callback

    • Will says:

I was looking on YouTube and I saw ET for Atari. I use to love that game too. Wow u really brought back some memories! 🙂

I just tried the carrot cake cookies, they are pretty good. I still like the pumpkin ones better.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: Yeah I’ve been eating the carrot cake ones consistently now. I too like the carrot cake ones better

  5. Elisa says:

I didn’t realize Atari was going under. There’s something about those video game machines you can’t beat.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Elisa: Sad. Now they are selling their assets, and trademarks, to other companies… of course, if someone like Microsoft buys them, maybe we can have Asteroids on Kinect?

  6. Kahnfucius says:

So it’s ok to start feeding my plants with Mountain Dew now? (I can’t find Brawndo anymore).

  7. Icee says:

I saw these the carrot cake cookies in the store and my eyes popped out my head and I was so excited. So excited that as I waited on my friend to make a decision on his purchase that I devoured half (and i do mean 4 cookies) the bag before even leaving the isle. (FYI:my friend was trying to decide what type of cheezit to purchase which was in the same isle)
I am not a fan of really sweet desserts and I trulyenjoyed and will purchase againthe Carrot Cake cookies.

  8. Jaye Waranch says:

Purchased the carrot cake cookies .. very disappointed. Packaged poorly they were stuck together could not serve a total cookie to anyone. The entire bag was in pieces. Would not purchase again . You really missed the mark on this and makes me question other new items. I would suggest you have your cookies taste a good carrot cake and then try to make a cookie taste like it. You just totally missed the mark on these … a waste of my money.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Jaye: Awh, I’m sorry. Yeah, maybe I haven’t had good carrot cake in a while. Although…..are you talking to me, the Junk Food Guy, or to Pepperidge Farm directly? Hmmmmm
