Review: Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream & What the Hell, Winter X-Games???

Junk Food Nation, I can hear you… “DO A REGULAR BLOG POST!”  Ok, ok.

So I have a beef with the Winter X-Games.  Recently, a man named Caleb Moore died in the Winter X-Games from participating in his event, known as freestyle snowmobiling. According to reports:

“Caleb Moore was attempting a backflip in the freestyle event in Aspen when the skis on his 450-pound snowmobile caught the lip of the landing area, sending him flying over the handlebars. Moore landed face first into the snow with his snowmobile rolling over him.”

UM, WHAT?? Why do we even HAVE this event? Look, I think the X-Games are pretty cool, and flips on skis, snowboarding – you have at it.  But why is FREESTYLE SNOWMOBILING an event??? Snowmobiles are not meant to do flips and sh*t like that!  And shuddup with your comments that this is “just like motocross.” Except Motorcycles have suspension and things of that nature.  SNOWMOBILES DON’T.  They have tank-like belt wheels and skis.  THAT’S IT.

Moore’s death is a tragedy.  And I’m not mad at the snowmobile, so don’t turn this into a gun debate thing. I’m sure it’s the injuries he sustained when he hit the ground that ended up being the most impactful…although I’m sure the snowmobile rolling over him didn’t help.   *I’M* mad at ESPN for wanting to make an event like this.  I bet this incident forced them to scrap their latest brainstorm, bobsledding with Zambonis and no seatbelts. WHEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Buzz around the industry seems to indicate that ESPN is acknowledging that dangerous events are starting to get out of control, so at least that’s a start. But I’m sure it’s just to cover their ass – like the NFL and Roger Goodell, I am highly suspicious of how much ESPN really cares about safety.

ESPN, I get it. Tricks on skis and snowmobiles are fun to watch, and people make their own choices. But I’M saying you don’t get to shrug your shoulders and say, “Whatever, his decision,” this time. YOU TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SOMETHING, ESPN. OR I PUNCH YOU.

Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream: The Money Shot

Hey look! Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream!  Otherwise known as “Stuff Junk Food Guy wanted to review during the holiday season but forgot was in his freezer until he moved the package of italian sausage out of the way!”  Cool.

I love Blue Bunny, but I often can’t find it in a lot of grocery stores.  Come on, BB!  Up the distribution!

What, am I an idiot?

Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream has a safety seal to…lock in freshness and decrease mess.  Which would make sense, if I didn’t know how to properly handle an ice cream container to begin with.  “I dunno guys, I usually just try to shove my spoon through the top lid and hack some out, and then I throw the tub on the table until I feel like eating it again.”  Who does that? I’m the type who will eat an entire tub in one sitting anyways, so resealing the tub is unusually never an issue…but is an issue for others????

Helllllllooooooo peppermint sauce

I’d like some peppermint sauce for my pancakes, sprinkled with peppermint flakes on top. Thanks. With a side of potassium sorbate? PERFECT.

Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream

Hey, where’d that half of the tub go?

I took a bite of this Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream, and was really pleased.  Two words: VERY REFRESHING. Basically, this tasted like candy cane ice cream!  And not in the sense that I’ve had ice cream that had candy cane bits, etc.  No, imagine if you had a candy cane, and then wondered what it would taste like if the entire stick was in ice cream form – THIS IS THAT ICE CREAM.

First, the white mint ice cream was minty and refreshing. Tasted creamy like a vanilla, but with plenty of mint flavor that wasn’t overpowering or overly sweet.  Just a nice creamy mint flavored ice cream.  Simple, clean.

It’s like eating a candy cane

The ribbons of minty syrup were VERY minty and provided good pockets of minty pop here and there.  AND THERE WAS PLENTY OF IT, TOO!  Green and red syrup was in every bite.

The tub of this Blue Bunny Seasonal Selections Perfectly Peppermint Ice Cream also says there are peppermint candies…which I didn’t taste/feel.  I mean, I got ZERO crunch in this, so if they were supposed to give some texture, there was none.  But, if they melted into the ice cream…well, all the better.  I didn’t miss them…I liked how this tasted/felt as it was.

Back to the syrup, the large amount of it meant that each spoonful looked colorful and weird.  Take a look:

I just can’t get over the fact that the carton image looks like the ice cream has flecks of scallion in it. Like scallion cream cheese, but with a weird blood-red swirl through it. Gross.

  2. Yes! I was thinking they looked like scallions too!! Or jalapeño bits – so weird! Glad it tasted good because it looks monstrous…

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Teresapalooza: HA! Jalapeno bits. Actually, upon more consumption, I might actually say there’s TOO much syrup in this ice cream…

  3. Elisa says:

The label design reminds me of those cheap peppermint bits cans available in December.

Blue Bunny’s distribution is getting better. This time two years ago, I wouldn’t even have one of their flavors in a store around me. Now they have their own section in most stores here. None of them seem to stock the limited edition flavors though which is a shame. Still, they do make a pretty reliable ice cream. Also, the fresh seal is definitely a plus for someone like me who eats way too many different flavors of ice cream at once and doesn’t like to waste food.

  5. Hannah says:

That is so funny, I looked at this and thought crab sticks and spring onions (Scallions to you guys 😉 ) then realised I was looking at ice cream. I had a Blue Bunny Chocolate Caramel with Cashews ice cream stick when I went to Busch Gardens last year, which tasted awesome by the way; I just assumed that it was a popular brand in the US?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Hannah: crab sticks!? YIKES, lol. Blue Bunny is a popular brand…they just don’t have the best distribution across the states.

  6. DDM says:

Blue Bunny chocolate ice cream at Busch Gardens is TWICE as dark as the B.B. homemade chocolate I bought at the grocery store. Why? I asked at B.Gardens if their BB chocolate was Chocolate Champion, but they pulled up their container and it only said ‘chocolate’ on it. I can tell you it is NOT the same as what I bought at the grocery. It is darker and much better. What is it, where can I buy it in Tampa, FL.

  7. DDM says:

See – even Blue Bunny locator can’t find Chocolate Champion within 100 miles, except I manage to buy cones of it at Busch Gardens. Voted #1 Chocolate Ice Cream in 2008 by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), this award winning chocolate ice cream will deliver a taste experience you’ll never forget! Sold at: Convenience Stores, Grocery Stores. Grocery store only has their plain homemade chocolate, only half as dark brown, which favor isn’t worth eating.
