In Stores Now & Tuesday Night Play-In Game Predictions

Junk Food Nation, I’m sorry.  I’m just going to be talking a lot of this blog for the next few days about March Madness.  I just am.  I just am.  And to start things off, how about some predictions for tonight’s game?  Mark it down:

(11) Middle Tennessee will thump (11) St. Mary’s: The Junk Food Gal went to school in the WCC.  I know how bad it is.  Oh, zip it regarding Gonzaga – they are clearly the exception.  And I realize St. Mary’s has made an appearance in the Big Dance in the past. But Middle Tennessee is big, rebounds well, and focuses on defense.  Moreover, the WCC is softer than lukewarm butter.  You think Pepperdine is stiff competition for St. Mary’s? Please.  Middle Tennessee will out-tough those softies.

(16) North Carolina A&T will end (16) Liberty’s amazing run: Have you heard of Liberty?  They were the team that went 15-20 (that’s right, a losing record), but managed to plow their way through their conference tournament to earn their first NCAA bid since…well, a long time.  Liberty also used to have Seth Curry before he transferred to Duke.  Anyways, I don’t need to know anything about NC A&T to see that Liberty will be overwhelmed and outmatched in this play-in matchup.  Wide eyed and getting dunked on.

Sigh…looking forward to defending how I got these two wrong tomorrow 😉  In the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s in stores now!

In Stores Now

Healthy snacks!

At Giant I saw these Plentils – crunchy lentil chips.  I’ve had lentil chips before, so I know that they can be tasty…sometimes.  I was struck, however, by the fact that these were flavored “margherita pizza.” That’s awful specific, don’t you think?  Not just pizza flavored, but fresh-mozz-basil-tomato-margherita-pizza flavored?  Fancy schmancy, if they were able to pull that off.

More Chex Mix?

Also, at Giant, another cocoa-based Chex Mix, but this time, one that is NOT Muddy Buddies?   Wait…so this just has chocolate chex in it and that’s it?  No thanks.

GELATO!

Also at Giant: New Haagen Dazs Stracciatella Gelato!  According to Wiki: “In Europe ice cream with a vanilla base and chocolate shavings is also called stracciatella.” Ok…so…vanilla and slight chocolate gelato?  Pass.

Coffee up my Gelato!

Also found at Giant, new Haagen Dazs Cappucino Gelato.  This one sounds pretty good; some of my earliest memories of my dad are going to mall and getting ice cream.  He always got pistachio or coffee flavored, and I thought those were old man flavors.  I like these flavors now, myself, as an adult?  The moral of the story? I AM OLD.

That’s not even trying

At Giant, new Haagen Dazs Vanilla Bean Gelato.  BOOOOOOOOOO….this is a cop out flavor.  Gimme some thrill, Haagen Dazs!  Not this plain BS.  Put a ribbon of SOMETHING in there, chocolate, cinnamon, pepperoni – SOMETHING.

Who doesn’t love pretzel sandwiches??

One of my guiltiest pleasures growing up was eating a bag of pretzels with a stack of Kraft singles.  No, not cheese dip, or even good cheese – KRAFT. SINGLES.  I would take a corner of the cheese slice, press it onto a pretzel, and chomp the whole thing down.  This sort of reminds me of those days.  But spicier.  Seen at Harris teeter.

Not new enough for me

Also seen at Harris Teeter are these Roasted Garlic and Herb Snyder’s of Hanover Sourdough Nibblers.  They looked pretty good, but how is roasted garlic and herb a new flavor?  Go back to 1994, please.

Swirly Whirl!

I’m reviewed Pepperidge Farm Swirl Bread a bunch on this blog, so I decided to pass on this newest flavor, Blueberry.  Seeing this bag, however, does remind me of how much I like raisin bread.  I swear, I could just sit on the couch and eating an entire loaf of raisin bread, slice after slice, without blinking.  Not that I did that anytime recently, or anything.  Friday.

Well, well!

So…the only thing that makes these limited edition is the brightly colored candy shell??  Junior Mints, come on now.  You’re better than this.  You know damn well this isn’t anything to be touting as “new” and “different.”  At this point, these are just Mentoes with a liiiiiitle bit of chocolate.  No.

The Haagen Dazs Limoncello gelato is good. Just the right balance of tart v. sweet. Enjoyed it a lot.

When I was in DC, one of the local kwikie mart’s had a gingerbread gelato. Umm…wow.

    • junkfoodguy says:

      @FlyOverGirl: Holy moly, gingerbread gelato?????

    • FlyOverGirl says:

      I know, right?

I found the gelato at Manhattan Market up by Woodley Park/Zoo metro — 2647 Connecticut Avenue Northwest. It was from a local company that had packaged their product to sell in a grocery. Don’t recall what the other flavors were, but they sounded equally good.

@FlyOverGirl – well, holy cow. That is right near me!

  2. Nick Rovo says:

Stracciatella is pretty much just chocolate chip gelato. Depending on who’s making it, they can very from tiny flecks of chocolate spread throughout to the size of chocolate tiles you’d expect from Ben & Jerry’s. I need to get around to trying some of the new HD’s gelato flavors though Dubba has already tried one and has a couple more in the pipeline to be posted.

  3. Elisa says:

I ate gelato nearly every day while on vacation on the famed Dalmatian coast of Croatia 3 years ago. There were quite a few gelato places with plenty of flavors to choose, some were really interesting and flavorful! When I went to France last year, I did the same thing. Great stuff!

what are your final four picks?? Just finished my bracket..picked Louisville,Miami,Florida and Ohio State

  5. Alek says:

Pepperidge Farm Blueberry Bread again replaces Blueberries with Cranberries. I saw the bag I think what PF did is that they took cranberries soaked them in a blue liquid full of blueberry flavoring. “cheap” it again

  6. Alek says:

    @ Junkfoodguy

Pepperidge Farm is trying to keep it cheap and dried cranberries is cheaper by the pound. Dried blueberries are very expensive.
