In Stores Now & Frito-Lay Has Chosen a Winner: Cheesy Garlic Bread!!!

Junk Food Nation, I’m in LA right now to celebrate Actor Sis’ birthday (WHICH IS TODAY!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY ACTOR SIS!) and to attend a good friend’s wedding.  If you’re been following my Twitter/Facebook/Instagram, you know I’ve been eating my way through the weekend so far.  I know I just had In-N-Out yesterday, but I KIND OF want it again.  Now.  NOW!

But first, some news. Frito-Lay has chosen a winner!  For anyone NOT following junk food related news as closely as I have (actually, I had no idea they already made this decision; friend of the blog Elisa had to point it out to me – thanks, Elisa!), Frito-Lay announced on Monday that Cheesy Garlic Bread beat out Sriracha and Chicken n Waffles as the new Lay’s flavor!  I reviewed these chips a while back, and loved all of them, and I’m not too surprised that Cheesy Garlic Bread won, despite my own vote for Sriracha.

Two interesting points about this contest: besides the $1 million dollar grand prize, the woman who came up with these chips also gets another prize possibility…if 1% of her flavor’s 2013 sales surpass $1 million, then she’ll take that amount home instead.  Of course, anyone who can do math knows that means Cheesy Garlic Bread Chip sales need to surpass $100 million dollars, which I don’t know if that’s possible, but hey – its nice to dream!  And second, apparently the Sriracha and the Chicken n Waffles flavors will be making an encore showing this summer anyways.  As The Impulsive Buy told me, “So why did they do this whole voting thing?” Why indeed.

Anyways, let’s take a look at some stuff I’ve seen in stores recently:

These may not all be new, but all I know is one week, they had all the common Talenti flavors plus the Alphonso Mango flavor, and the next week, all these other flavors I’d never seen before started showing up!  Lisbon Lemon? Roman Raspberry? Blood Orange??? Holy crap, Talenti. Just…just take my bank account. Please…just take the money. I surrender.

Remember the good old days when there were only plain Milanos and then maybe a Mint Milano here and there.  Well, now there are LOT of different Milano flavors.  And while I had seen an orange and chocolate based Milano, I hadn’t seen this raspberry chocolate one before.  Looks good…

I already complained back in this post that Lunchables were even less healthy than when I grew up, since these days, along with the random ass sandwich, they threw in candy, chips, and sugar to add to the bottle of water that was packaged within.  But these Lunchables Snack Duos aren’t even trying to pretend to be a good part of your kid’s diet.  What the heck is this?? It’s Oreos and a small thing of salsa plus chips?  Even putting aside the extreme waste of calories that this is, HOW LAZY DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO NOT BUY THESE THINGS ON YOUR OWN AND PORTION THEM OUT?

I realize it’s funny to hear me, the Junk Food Guy, gripe about healthy eating, but I personally like actual real food in addition to all my sinful indulgence.  Cookie sticks that you dip in creme and sprinkle chocolate chips over?  That sounds ok…but not great.  Gotta give it to Lunchables; they’ve found a way to get more sugar into kids these days. I’m waiting for the next Snack Duo which are cookies that you dip into chocolate creme and then toss-to-coat in a vat of Pixie Stick sugar.  MMMMMM MY EYES ARE VIBRATING.

Thoughts? Please comment below or hit me up on Twitter @junkfoodguy or LIKE my Facebook Page and message me there. I also have Google+!! Let’s hang out.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

not buying lunchables always makes me feel like a better parent…. but i can buy the s’mores ones for myself right??

Incredible. The “food” of choice for HoneyBooBoo no doubt. It’d be more accurate if they just labelled it poison. And we wonder where childhood obesity starts.
Have to admit, I’m kind of sorry I gave up meat before having an In & Out Burger. I always feel a bit left out in the I&O Burger vs. 5 Guys debate.

The lunchables snack packs is almost similar as the fun snack packs from the ’90’s.

    Remember those?

Wait, those smores sticks actually look enticing…

I voted for the Chicken and Waffles flavor myself, but I can’t say I’m disappointed as I didn’t like any of the flavors enough to want to buy them regularly. I doubt I’ll even buy them when they come back this summer.

It’s kinda like when Mountain Dew did the same thing. I tried all the flavors and voted for the one I wanted, but when the winner was chosen and it became a regular thing I hardly gave it a second glance (I think I’ve bought a Mountain Dew Voltage maybe twice in the five years since it became a regular flavor).

@Devin: I’m glad you got to try all three though! Such a good marketing scheme – I was compelled to shell out the cash more than once for these chips. DAMN YOU FRITO LAY! JUST TAKE MY WALLET WHY DONTCHA

I feel exactly like you re: Mountain Dew. Can’t remember when the last time I had one was

    You’re welcome 🙂

I remember seeing the ads for Lunchables in the 90s. I usually bought lunch from home all through school and now for work.

I’ve been following you for a bit now, in secret. The fact that you’ve never seen the Roman Raspberry Talenti has brought me out of my shell. It’s like punch in the face of raspberry delicious.

A good punch in the face…
