Review: Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar & Anna Benson, You Crazy Crazy Bitch

Junk Food Nation, it’s Wednesday and the ESPN BODY ISSUE IS FINALLY OUT!  I mentioned it a while back when I discussed the fact that 77-year-old golf player Gary Player would be appearing naked in the issue.  Well, all that and more can be found HERE.  After looking at these tasteful nudes, both male and female, let’s just say I need to go hit the treadmill.

And speaking of sports, Anna Benson is back in the news!  The former baseball wife of pitcher Kris Benson was famous for, well, being hot, posing for FHM, and giving a great interview with Howard Stern in which she claimed that if she ever found out that kris was cheating on her, she’d sleep with the entire Mets organization as revenge.  Classy.  (Incidentally, Kris did cheat on her a couple of times, and that led to some pretty unpleasant legal marital strife.  They met, btw, while Kris was a minor leaguer and she was a stripper.  Awesome.)

They are currently on the outs, pending a divorce, which is never good.  And then THIS happens: Anna Benson shows up at Kris’ house wearing a BULLETPROOF VEST, armed with a gun, knife, a metal baton, and ammo, breaks into the home, and demands $30,000 from him.  Now, I have no doubt that Kris Benson is a complete douche who brought this on himself.  And since Kris was the one cheating that led to their breakup, I think the douche-ness is confirmed.  BUT WHEN DID ARMING YOURSELF TO THE TEETH AND EXTORTING YOUR PARTNER DURING THE DIVORCE SEPARATION PERIOD EVER SEEM LIKE A GOOD IDEA?  Wow.

Bravo, Anna Benson, for pulling some of the craziest sh*t I’ve seen in a while. Not since Lisa Left Eye Lopez burned down Andre Rison’s house have I read a story like this.

Today’s junk food: Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar!

Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar: The Money Shot

Wild Ophelia is a sister company of Vosges, whose chocolate I’ve reviewed on this site before. Wild Ophelia has some CRAZY chocolate flavors, like Southern Hibiscus Peach and New Orleans Chili.  I spotted Wild Ophelia at the Fancy Food Show, where they debuted their Hunger Games-themed chocolate.  But this bar was actually purchased for me by Actor Sis.  A dark chocolate bar that sports BBQ Potato Chip flavor?  We’ll see…

Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar contains actual hickory honey BBQ baked potato chips from the Billy Goat Chip Company.  Those sound pretty good (especially the spicy-warm-the-back-of-your-throat part) but my concern with chocolate like this is that the chocolate overwhelms the ingredient.

Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar: Solid. Sleek. Classy.

Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar smelled like REALLY GOOD dark chocolate when I placed it up to my nose.  I mean, like fine cocoa.  Couldn’t smell any smoke yet, though…

Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar: Little bitsa crispies

When I took my first big bite of this Wild Ophelia Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chips Dark Chocolate Bar, all I could taste was the dark chocolate.  The potato chip bits were nice and crispy inside the chooclate, and gave good texture, but my first thought was “AHA!  I knew it.  Drowned out the BBQ flavor.”

The flavor I was tasting was a semi-sweet rich dark chocolate flavor that had that characteristic tang of raw cocoa.  I wanted to give this bar another shot, so I took a bigger, second bite…and I started to notice a small hint of salt.  Then suddenly, the “salt” taste became more seasoned, and then I WAS tasting an odd, smoky, BBQ flavor!  It came rushing out in this second bite, weirdly.  There was NO presence of this flavor in bite #1.

As I chewed, the flavor was indeed a mix of dark chocolate and a smoky BBQ flavor (wouldn’t go so far as saying it tasted like BBQ sauce).  No, it tasted like the type of BBQ seasoning you’d find on a chip – which makes sense because that’s what it was.  But with this second bite, the chocolate and savory tastes were more balanced.  The cocoa didn’t overwhelm, but definitely helped keep the balance more in the sweet side than the savory.

Overall, very impressive.  Not sure if this dark chocolate sweet/savory flavor profile is my bag, but it was definitely interesting enough for me to recommend.  Nice work, Wild Ophelia.  Now send me some of that Hunger Games chocolate!

COST: Looks like it cost $5.50
