Review: Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch, Peppered Orange Caramel & SPOONABLE TWITTER CONTEST & I Love You, WordPress 3.7.1
Junk Food Nation, thankfully WordPress got its act together and released WordPress 3.7.1, fixing all the bugs from yesterday, so now I’m back to loving WordPress. You were on thin ice there for a moment, WP. I’ve got my eye on you.
That means I can turn my anxiety back to watching Game 6 of the World Series tonight. While my heart will still be rooting for STL, it’s very difficult to see Boston losing two in a row at home. The key to tonight’s game will be Michael Wacha – can he outduel Lackey? Can he show his rookie brilliance once more? Because if STL can take Game 6, then the series is back to a semi-even tilt, though still favoring Boston since they’re at home. But a Game 7 where everyone is emptying out their pens? That would be fun to watch. I’m hoping for that.
Meanwhile tonight, I’ll be recording the Nosh Show. What’s the Nosh Show you ask? It’s a bi-weekly podcast I do with some other food bloggers! Check it out here.
Today’s junk food: Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch and Peppered Orange Caramel!
Oh, Spoonable. You and your luscious caramel sauces. I love you.
I blogged about Spoonable a short while back. First discovered at the Summer Fancy Food Show, Spoonable was one of my favorite companies this past summer. I was able to grab some samples and review four of its flavors: Salty Caramel, Chewy Sesame, Flowery Lavender, and Spicy Chili.
The good folks there at Spoonable caught wind of my reviews, and sent me their Brooklyn Butterscotch and Peppered Orange Caramel to finish off the reviews of their entire slate of flavors! Thanks, Spoonable.
Even MORE exciting, they have arranged for a giveaway for YOU, Junk Food Nation. But I’ll get to that in a moment. Let’s do a review first. First up: Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch!
I have to be honest – I sometimes have a hard time distinguishing caramel from butterscotch, outside of the fact that butterscotch is generally more creamy. But I’m eager to try this Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch side by side with its salty caramel to find out the difference.
Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch has some things the Salty Caramel doesn’t – molasses and vanilla, to be specific.
OMG, this Spoonable Brooklyn Butterscotch looks AWESOME, doesn’t it? And lemme tell ya – it tasted just as good. Rich and velvety are two good terms for it – the sauce itself was thick but not too gummy. It flowed off of my spoon easily, and didn’t stick like honey or syrup.
And the taste was spot on. Less salty than the caramel, and full of buttery butterscotch flavor! I noticed hints of molasses too, but mostly this tasted like the best butterscotch you’ve ever had. Plenty sweet, and plenty creamy. I want this on ice cream. Nows.
Next: Spoonable Peppered Orange Caramel!
Spoonable Peppered Orange Caramel came to me in its old version, before Spoonable got all pretty-like with its labeling. That’s ok – I’ll take the bigger 7.75 oz jar. And the old school printing makes me feel like I got someone’s personal stash!
Spoonable Peppered Orange Caramel has a very short ingredient list, and I can only assume the orange is in the “organic extracts.” At least I hope so 😉
Spoonable Peppered Orange Caramel came flecked with BIG PIECES of cracked black pepper. I took a big spoonful into my mouth, and the flavor, quite frankly, overwhelmed me. I actually started coughing, but NOT because it tasted bad! Quite the opposite – for peppery orange flavor, this sauce was POWERFUL.
The orange flavor was super bold in this sauce, tasting as if tons of fine orange zest had been shaved into it. Citrus-y and almost over-the-top orange-y. And the black pepper came through VERY nicely – spicy and full of that peppery zing that tickles your tongue.
When I checked out Spoonable’s website, it suggested using this in glaze for meats, etc. Ahhhh that makes sense. And I’m excited to try – this would make the PERFECT sweet/spicy marinade for some pork.
So, I wouldn’t eat this particular flavor alone, but would definitely pair it with other things.
Check out the other flavor reviews here.

@Junkfoodguy: You’re back! You went MIA for a while there, leaving a huge void in my daily baseball banter, haha.
How crazy has this series been?? I’ve been dying to know what you thought about the obstruction call the other night- thoughts??
As for tonight’s game, I have a feeling you’re right- even if the Cardinals manage to stay alive, it’ll be near impossible to take the game tomorrow night too. I hope Wacha’s on his game, and more importantly, that the Cards offense can show up. Seems like Beltran’s been a bit out of it (understandably) ever since he slammed into that wall to rob Big Papi of the grand slam earlier in the series. That’d be yet another example of us getting screwed by a star player getting hurt at the most inopportune moment (I was rooting for Dodgers- Hanley was clearly injured; rooting for the Tigers to take the Sox, but Cabrera was hurt…).
Hope to hear from you soon!
John C.
@John C: Lol, I’m doing a huge comment responding blitz today, sorry for being MIA. Let me respond to your latest comment….
