Review: Doritos JACKED Test Flavor 2653 & Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs
Junk food Nation, thanks to everyone who commented on Friday’s post – it seems like the consensus was that I had every right to take the chair, but everyone was OK with me taking the high road. Next time, I’ll remember all the great retorts you suggested and blast that guy, Cheri Oteri-style (“SEE THIS CHAIR?? IT’S MINE NOW.”)
Nation, I’m headed to LA later this week to see Actor Sis, but HOPEFULLY I’ll be able to keep up with my posts. Besides stuffing myself with all the West Coast delicacies I can find, I’ll be watching the second round of the NBA playoffs three hours earlier than I’m used to. I can’t believe I’m so geeked up for this NBA postseason; it’s amazing what a winning local team will do for you.
If you watched the first round, you knew that IT WAS THE BEST PLAYOFF ROUND 1 IN NBA HISTORY. Er, to me, at least. I mean, I knew the Heat would sweep, and I was mesmerized by the Bulls/Wiz series the entire time…but also five series going SEVEN GAMES?? Last minute buckets, last second blocks??? IT. WAS. AWESOME.
My Round 1 Predictions didn’t go too badly – 6 of 8 teams right. Sorry Houston and Golden State. Quick Round 2 Predictions:
WIZ over PACERS in 6. (Gotta have faith)
HEAT over NETS in 5. (Old legs get tired…wait, both teams have old legs?)
THUNDER over CLIPPERS in 6. (Boom goes the Dynamite)
SPURS over BLAZERS in 7. (Paddy Mills, PADDY MILLS!)
Wiz/Pacers tonight at 7:00pm. You know where I’ll be….enjoy the second round, Junk Food Nation! Let me know your predictions in the comments.
Today’s junk food is the new Doritos JACKED Test Flavor 2653!
On Instagram, straight flexin’. Anyways, I have been searching for these Doritos JACKED Test Flavor 2653 for a while now (er…for like, couple weeks). I tracked down the red one (855) last week, and reviewed them on this site. TOO MUCH PEPPER for my taste. I guessed some sort of spicy taco as the flavor.
As I discussed last Monday, Doritos has THREE new test flavors as part of a new contest/promotion called the Bold Flavor Experiment. This BLUE bag is one of them. I finally spotted this small bag at a random Giant grocery way out in Maryland. Go fig. Let’s do some photos and get right to the flavor guessing.
Doritos JACKED Test Flavor 2653 contained a LOT of interesting ingredients – bacon flavor, smoke, brown sugar, cocoa, paprika, chocolate liquor. Interesting. When I sniffed the open bag, I could smell barbecue sauce aroma. Sweet and smoky. Let’s munch.
I personally liked these Doritos JACKED Test Flavor 2653 better than the 855. The flavors were pretty clear on this one. The sweetness of the brown sugar. The flavor of the cocoa/chocolate. Definitely some heat. Definitely some porky barbecue flavor from the bacon and smoke. Good savoriness from the onion and garlic. This had no buttermilk or cheese and it showed. There was no creaminess in this chip – just lots of corn chip crunch and plenty of sweet heat.
So what flavor was this? I’m just going to generically say that it’s a spicy rib barbecue flavor. Maybe it’s reminiscent of this UK version, Flamin’ Barbecue? Some out there on the blogosphere say it reminds them of mole sauce, but I’m not buying it. While I can get behind the spicy choco flavor, and the “bacon” representing the pork, all the mole I’ve had was never this sweet – I’ve never had a mole sweetened with brown sugar.
So I’m leaning more towards a spicy BBQ. Which, if that’s what this is, is sort of boring, now that I’ve written it down. But I liked it! Tell me what flavor you think this is in the comments below…
PURCHASED AT: Giant Food

Definitely BBQ sauce for me. On some chips the chocolate really stood out.
@MP: I wonder if they’ll eventually tell us what they “named” these flavors – or what they had originally intended them to be called
I’ve tried all 3 and this flavor #2653 is my least favorite. I just couldn’t get behind the spicy sweetness. The darkness of the chips were a instant turn off and I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. However, I did like the flavor of #855 but again too much heat for my taste. My favorite hands down is #404. It has a slight sweet taste with some spices and little heat. I may not dig all the flavors with these promotions but I find it fun to participate in. I hope they continue with this idea in the future.
@james: I agree – this has been a fun promo to try and guess what these are
I haven’t seen any of these yet, but I have to admit “Natural Bacon Type Flavoring” in the ingredients is intriguing.
And is your sister anyone we’d know? IS YOUR SISTER LUCY LIU!?!
And GO SPURS!
@Mike N: WHat’re your NBA predictions?
I think it could be pork mole flavor.
@Alek: Very possibly. BBQ Pork mole?
Mole. (Said like Austin Powers)
Mole can be sweet. Especially with Pork and Beef Roast, proteins with a deeper more robust flavor. Chicken Mole is generally not sweet. I did not read the ingredient list in the chips. You mentioned Brown Sugar? Only guess is that is what they used in place of prunes or raisins which lends itself to the sweetness in the sauce. The smoke…It has to be Chipotle…..
They are good. Glad you found them!
@Jeremy: YEah, not sure if you saw my prior message – thanks for offering to send the chips previously! I did appreciate it, but yeah figured I’d find them eventually. And you’re right – sweeter moles on non-chicken. I’ll be curious if they ever “reveal” the flavor names
@JEremy: (also, lol re the austin powers reference, MO-LEY MO-LEY MO-LEY)
Anyone try the yellow ones yet? I’ve tried both red and blue bags. A little iffy on the yellow ones lol.
They’re…different. Sweet, but still some kick. The have orange and lime juice solids and you can taste the fruitiness.
@Dana: Mojo?
@Jessica: Tried the yellow ones!

I think this flavor is chocolate dipped bacon. This is a big fad now in a lot of places they might have added a maple or brown sugar bacon to it.
They’re the one flavor I haven’t tried, yet, but from the ingredients and other reviews, I fail to see how they can be anything but chocolate covered/candied bacon. Good call.
@Dana: Let me know what your final take is, once you’ve tried them
@Baboguy: Maple bacon Doritos?? Interesting take…
I THIK IT IS CHIPOLITE SPICY BBQ
@Resha: Good call!
I have tried all 3 404 in the Orange bag was my favorite but I honestly think that this one in the blue bag is chocolate chipotle smokey bacon the red bag is buffalo wings with blue cheese and the Orange bag is sweet Memphis barbeque with lime or because of the affiliation with taco bell could be mountain dew Baja blast if course these are all guesses but dying to know what they are for sure
@Shells: Someone suggested the orange bag was Pork Mojo. Thoughts?
I agree, these are BBQ ribs most likely. I did not like them. They start sweet, then lose their flavor for a few seconds, then once they are gone, they BURN. Oh well, was fun to try!
@Holly: I’m curious to see what “name” of this flavor eventually comes out
Sweet and spicy bbq
@Kalyn: Nailed it
Just picked some of these up at my neighborhood convenience store because they looked mysterious and interesting. I agree with about 90% of your review – the first thing I said to my wife when I tried the first one was “Barbecue Ribs”. Definitely got a nice flavor of sweet brown sugar barbecue sauce, pork (bacon/ribs), smoke flavoring, paprika and cayenne pepper for the bitey aftertaste. I didn’t catch the chocolate or liquor flavoring that you noted, but maybe that’s just me. Overall, I’m enjoying them.
@Clowerweb: Yeah, these seem to be the flavor most people enjoy out of the 3
Chipotle Chocolate Chili? It’s a thing: http://www.ourbestbites.com/2008/10/chipotle-chocolate-chili/ 🙂
@jay: HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm unsweetened chocolate. Not bad looking
I honestly believe this is more a Molay flavor.. You know the chocolate sauce used in mexican cuisine. But that’s just me.
@Siran: You’re not the first to say that, so you may be right! Hopefully they will reveal the flavors soon
I liked these ones the best. They should have foregone the onion garlic and paprika. This chip is excellent with the chocolate, Brown sugar, bacon for a little bit of the salty/umame flavor and they need to kick up the smoke a little. I could definitely get on board with a line of dessert chips if they made them. Like the first thing I was thinking when I bit into it was Campfire s’mores and then the bacon came through. I could also see doing VooDoo Doughnuts Bacon Maple Bar flavored chips too. Just add syrup and brown sugar with the bacon and smoke, maybe some cracked pepper and there you go. Instant hit here in Oregon.
@Michelle: chocolate bacon is a popular take! Glad to see Oregonians (Oregonians?) digging these chips too 🙂
My husband and I are split on these. He said they most remind him of the old Texas BBQ Grill Fritos from the old days, so he loves them. I think it was just a bit too spicy, maybe kick up the bacon and chocolate a notch. And I am wondering if they could have done without the MSG and had the same flavor…
@Nix – Old school Texas BBQ Fritos…the sweet ones. Hmmmmm. That’s a callback – yeah these were a bit spicier than those. Can’t wait to see what flavor these are called.
I find them to definitely be a Pork Mole. While chocolate covered bacon is an obvious assumption the spicyness contradicts that. I do not buy Ribs or BBQ because at least here in South Central PA the chocolate taste was quite pronounced.
@Falerinp: Another vote for Mole!
ehhh i personally dislike this flavor. It tasted like wax crayon with hershey chocolate, bacon and potatoes…. to me at least i’d say my fav is 855 cuz i love blue cheese and spice. The orange one was good too, reeinded me of Chinese orange chicken…
I really hope they say what flaovr they were going for cuz i am curious
@ME: Wax crayon – haha!
Well, I don’t know if it helps or hurt that I went n with just my taste buds. I didn’t read ingredients, because I didn’t want them 2 make up my mind b4 my tongue got a chance 2. I should say that, 2 the best of my knowledge, I’ve never had mole, but all I got from the blue bag was that dried shrimp flavor like is n ramen. So after a couple chips, my tongue settled on shrimp Creole 4 these. 404 made me want 2 throw up a little! I did smell, & taste enpugh of them 4 my tongue 2 settle on curried chicken as the flavor. Again, I could be WAY off base! I haven’t opened 855 yet, so I have nothing 2 add as far as that flavor, yet. =·)
@Nikki3777 – OOOOOO Shrimp Creole is a description I hadn’t heard yet. I like it!
I hope it’s really wax crayon with hershey chocolate, bacon and potatoes, like that last guy suggested. That would be the most awesome flavor of all time.
@Shibo: Lol, me too
I will call it Hot Chocolate.
@Tony: Spicy Hot Chocolate
Chocolate jalapeño
@Kaylan: I wonder if anyone has even tried that? Similar to chocolate covered strawberries – chocolate covered jalapenos!
Yeah… I’m almost positive it’s a sweet and spicy BBQ…. This one is my favorite hads down of the other two… could go the rest of my like and never care if I tried the other two again… But this one I would think about like butter finger BB’s or Cheeto’s Paws from back in the day… AWESOME!!!
@Damion: CHEETOS PAWS. Good callback
Coffee
I have to side with the Sweet and Hot BBQ comments, possibly a Sweet Heat Dry Rub. It certainly has its share of sweet and hot but my tongue didn’t settle on chocolate as much as just sweet, perhaps my buds aren’t quite as refined. I also chose to ignore the ingredient list and my first impression looks-wise is that they look dirty, which isn’t great because I assumed it would transfer to my fingers – surprisingly the color didn’t transfer like cheetos does. My first impression taste-wise was chipotle and barbecue sauce.
@Gary: I wonder when they will release the names of these flavors? I’m dying with anticipation.
I do admit I was right there with you with the smokey BBQ and though they are sweet I feel the spicy sticks out more. Until you said it I didn’t think of mole, but as soon as I read it I immediately thought of the homemade mole I had on my trip to Mexico in February and it tastes exactly like it.
@Ashley: Oh nice! Where in Mexico did you visit? I was most recently in Puerto Vallarta
Vomitous. Too HOT! It’s like they decided, let’s make more Doritos! Only triple the same spices and make it hotter. Ick.
Why why WHY don’t they just bring back the Cheeseburgers at Night? I loved everything about them, including the beautiful BAG, fer chrissakes.
@Anon: I LOVED THE CHEESEBURGERS AT NIGHT. Totally agree – loved the design and the flavor. Bitter that its gone as well.
Not a fan:( Although some chips where totally coated with what appeared to be burnt seasoning, some of them where virtually flavorless. There wasn’t enough consistency in flavor and the texture of the chip itself was borderline stale.
@AnnieK: Yeah, in general Doritos JACKED ain’t my cup of tea. I’m an original Nacho Cheese Dorito kind of guy myself
I opened the bag and did a visual inspection of the chip itself to see if the flavor would add or subtract from the flavor. I expected to taste something exciting between a smoky buffalo wing sauce or a sweet chipotle ranch sauce or even a coating of pepper jack cheese. the chip is way to peppery & spicy but it lacks that “WOW” factor, it left me wanting more flavor to match the color of the chip. My bag was $1.99 also at a local market. Or could it be i had an old bag, they did taste a little flat.
I think this is either an attempt at Chorizo or Mole (mow-lay)
so i guessed chipotle chocolate covered bacon? i think i may’ve won, too. maybe;)
Great Article. Thanks for the info. Does anyone know where I can find a blank test flavor 2653 form to fill out?
