DOES MILLI VANILLI HOLD UP?

Junk Food Nation, let’s talk about Milli Vanilli. Who?? I know, topical. Recently on the radio, I heard the trivia question: “Who is the only artist in history who has had a Grammy for Best New Artist rescinded?” The answer, of course, is Milli Vanilli.  For the uninitiated, the pop duo Milli Vanilli were two European models/dancers (who I’m pretty sure someone told me were Jamaican once due to their hair – completely untrue) who were the frontmen image for vocalists never seen on screen.  They looked like this – sort of amazing. These two lip-synced what other people sang.  And they had hits!  Like this song:

“Blameitontherainblameitontherainblameitonetherain…” Classic. Hey, back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, this was a smashola.  Anyways, the rest of the story is simple – they were eventually revealed NOT to be the real singers, and the Grammy Award people took their “Best New Artist” award back.  One of the funniest stories about this duo from Wiki: “[O]n July 21, 1989 during a live performance on MTV at the Lake Compounce theme park in Bristol, Connecticut. As they performed onstage live in front of an audience, the recording of the song ‘Girl You Know It’s True’ played and began to skip, repeating the partial line ‘Girl, you know it’s…’ over and over on the speakers. They continued to pretend to sing and dance onstage for a few more moments, then they both ran offstage.” Ah, how Ashlee Simpson of them.

Anyways, looking back, regardless of the context, does this song still hold up?  I am hearing more and more pop songs these days feature the awful return of saxophone (KNOCK IT OFF, GAGA) which was used liberally during the 80’s. So, what do you think, Junk Food Nation? Is this song still good? Do you like it, if you’ve never heard it?  OR is it completely ridiculous? I know the VIDEO is ridiculous, but I’m talking about the SOUND.  Tell me in the comments below.

TODAY’S JUNK FOOD: New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites!

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: Two varieties

Gosh that picture above is bright!  Burning my retinas…anyways, I spotted these Club Cornbread Cracker Bites at my local Wegmans, and decided to give the New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites a try.  Of course I’m going to go jalapeño over the regular homestyle.  DUH – wouldn’t you?

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: The Money Shot

Apparently, a while ago, there used to be a Keebler product called Bistro Cornbread Crackers. Well, those are gone, and these are here.  These New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites look smaller, like biscuits, as compared to the large thin rectangular prior bistro crackers.

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: biscuit like

I’m excited about these New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites because I love me some jalapeño cornbread.  I mean, the combo of slightly sweet cornbread with some vegetable-kick of jalapeño is a match made in heaven.

Plus, as more and more fancy restaurants feature various takes on cornbread in skillets, it makes sense that Keebler would want to get back into the game with these New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites.  Nice imagery above too – I dig it.

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: green and jalapeno pepper

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites contain both jalapeño pepper and jalapeño flavor. Hey, whatever. Just give this cracker some kick and I’ll be happy.

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: sort of like dog biscuits

I opened this box of New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites, and sniffed – faint jalapeño smell; I mostly smelled dough.  They did look remarkably like dog biscuits.  I know I have no size comparison…each of these crackers was about the size of a large Lego…like, 1″ per side.

New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites: flecks of SOMETHING embedded

I munched on a few of these New Keebler Club Jalapeño Cornbread Cracker Bites, and was REALLY pleased.  Upon first crunch, there wasn’t much flavor.  Just a crunchy thick cracker, which came apart like a crunchy biscuit in my mouth.  There was an artisan-like quality to it – the consistency was (on a tiny scale) scone-like – this wasn’t a flaky cracker.

The flavor grew as I chewed, and I tasted the cornbread flavor very clearly.  Nice and slightly sweet, these indeed tasted like cornbread crackers!  Nice round buttery corn and slight sweet taste.

The jalapeño flavor?  It also started slow but then came on – decent burn (not super spicy, but lingered nicely after swallowing), and the jalapeño had a good vegetable-y flavor, which I wanted since that’s how jalapeño cornbread tastes in real life.

Overall?  This wasn’t a revolutionary flavor, but an example of, IMO, a product perfectly executed to represent the flavor it promised.  These were called jalapeño cornbread cracker bites, and that’s EXACTLY what these tasted like. Love them. Eat them all day.

Wow, I didn’t remember that song being so slow. Like, painfully slow. Also, the synth really dates the sound I think. I would say that Milli Vanilli definitely doesn’t hold up. So, maybe rescinding the award was better on many grounds?

    Cornbread is the best!

    • junkfoodguy says:

      @sarah: so…..slowwwwwwww

But the song has so much! Great synth! Mid song modulation in key! A song break where the singers are riffing over fake clapping! Backup gospel-like singers!

  2. alek says:

Was it crumbly? This sounds good. Maybe as a topping for chili like a crumb topping that you see on fruit crisps

  3. Mike N. says:

Does Milli Vanilli hold up?? Girl, you know it’s true!

  4. MarcP says:

Milli Vanilli rules. If I were a cereal company, how do I not come out with a Milli Vanilla Chex or something.

  5. Bobcatsteph3 says:

Thanks for this review, picked up the boxes twice in stores but was hoping for a solid review–you know b/c God Forbid I blow $2.50. I like most Club Crackers and look forward to the jalapeño kick.

Booo to Milli Vanilli, they were my first CD purchase and oh how they wronged me! I shall not speak of them again–lol.

  6. barbaraann says:

Love the cornbread crackers. I always bought the Bistro cornbreads and really missed them.

  7. Floyd says:

Keebler “cornbread” crackers do not taste like real cornbread at all. No corn taste. In a blindfold test, you’d say they were just common shortbread cookies. What a disappointment! If you know and love real down home cornbread, you will hate these and feel duped by the name and flashy packaging. A great concept…failed execution.

  8. Robin Klepfer says:

I can not find these crackers any more. Any ideas where I should be looking? Wegmans no longer carries them. Tops no longer carries them. My Mom loves them!! I could use some help!!
