Junk Food Nation, quick personal OCD question – when you place knives in the dishwasher, do you place them up or down? I’ve polled about 15 people, and the answers ranged from “Always down – you’ll impale yourself otherwise” to “Always up – that way the dirt, etc. runs away from the part that touches food” to “Always down – that way you keep from stabbing your hand when you reach down to put the clean stuff away” to “I never place knives in the dishwasher.” As to that last one: WHAT?

I am a place-knife-up person, but the more I think about it, I’m not sure why. I think originally it was the reason that was listed above – everything else we put in the dishwasher goes up (at least in my house) – spoons, spatulas, forks, etc. So why not knives? Plus, since I tend to pre-wash everything, it’s not like there’s a ton of food lodged in there, so up or down, the knives will get clean. The JFGal is a knife-down-person, and will turn all the knives I put in the washer face down.

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos!!

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos: The Money Shot

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos? Didn’t we just have those….oh wait. These have CHOCOLATE cookies, instead of the previous Golden Oreo version. TRICKY, OREO. TRICKY. What, you think you can do anything now that you’ve made S’mOreos?

Still, these are interesting…pairing lemon with chocolate? I’ve seen that once before with Pepperidge Farm Lemon Chocolate Milanos…and LOVED them. Would these work too?

Opening this package of Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos, I sniffed and got a decent lemon-y smell. I definitely got the dark chocolate wafer aroma too, which was interesting.

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos contained some pretty yellow creme! I tasted it by itself – and it was that sugary, lemon-pie-filling flavor that I remembered from the Golden version of these Oreos. In other words, sugary lemon-y goodness. Nothing wrong about that.

Biting into and chewing these Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos, I have to admit – THESE WORKED FOR ME. They really did. The first flavor I got as I chewed was the semi-bitter, lightly sweet dark wafer cookie. It had the grittiness I remembered from normal Oreos…but rather than a vanilla creme adding sweetness as I chewed, the lemon creme gave a citrus finish to the flavor. And, oddly, it was really nice – the lemon fruit flavor added to the chocolate wafer taste to create and almost cereal-like flavor profile. If I closed my eyes, I swear these sort of tasted like Froot Loops – that same gritty chew that corn cereal has. That same half not-sweet corn cereal flavor mixed with sugar sweet sugary fruit coating. That same aftertaste of fruit-y chewed up stuff stuck in the divots of my teeth. IT WAS ALL THERE.

Anyways, the point is, this addition of lemon and chocolate was successful because (1) the dark chocolate wafer is not super sweet to begin with, (2) the lemon creme adds a refreshing finish to the flavor, and (3) the resultant combo wasn’t really chocolate plus fruit but more of an overall fruity cookie flavor.

These are hard to describe, but easy to eat. Seriously – this flavor just works. In a lot of ways, I think this flavor works better than the Golden one where the Golden Oreo is so sweet it can compete with the lemon flavor. Here, the lemon flavor was on a stage of its own.
