Review: Stauffer’s Apple Pie Snaps & What Is Your Holiday Main Dish?
JFG Nation, it’s holiday time. A year ago I asked you all whether you had turkey or ham for Christmas? The answer was overwhelmingly anything BUT turkey. So I want to ask it again this year, recognizing that not all of my readers celebrate Christmas but knowing that no matter what you celebrate, there’s gotta be one big ass meal somewhere. I’m sure even people who worship Battlestar Galatica take a break to nibble on a chicken tender or something.
So that’s the question: whenever or however you have your big holiday meal, WHAT IS THE CORE ENTREE? Turkey? Ham? Pasta? A gallon of bourbon? Cylons? Let me know in the comments below.
Today’s junk food: Stauffer’s Apple Pie Snaps!!
Yes, there is a new Nosh Show out. Yes, Hershey’s sent me all three of their new Cookie Crunch varieties. No I’m not writing about either today. Why? Because I really want to talk about these ginger snaps today!
Here’s a fun fact about Stauffer’s – they are the original Animal Cracker maker! Yeah I know Nabisco does those small Barnum & Bailey boxes, but Stauffer’s is the OG.
Stauffer’s Apple Pie Snaps were found in my local grocery, and I have to admit – I’m a sucker for snacks whose packaging is pared down to the basics. Sometimes packaging is all glitz no substance. A waxy brown paper bag like this one screams, “our cookies are so good we don’t need fancy paint to make you like us.”
As soon as I opened the bad I got a strong apple smell. It was crisp, tart, unmistakeable. Biting into one of these cookies, I was immediately impressed – rather than a ginger snap flavor, Stauffer’s took the original molasses cookie and went the apple route. These tasted like apple pie!
The cookies were sweet and had decent cinnamon molasses flavor, and then with each chew the flavor of a tart apple emerged. The combination was delicious – these were crunchy and light yet packed a big flavor punch. Well executed and the flavor was on point.
I knew I’d like these. Definitely worth a buy!

The JFG

I have an Italian family. So we make ricotta and mozzarella stuffed shells. Although as a dessert lover, I would like to consider dessert the main item!
Also, what are the other two of the three varieties referred to above?
Usually a roast. Our Christmas staple dish are these cheesy potatoes that my grandmother used to make. Basically you take a bunch of frozen hash browns, cover them with cheese sauce and onions, then bake.
No other animal cracker is as good a Stouffers. We are polish Roman Catholics. That means December is a day of fast until it gets dark. Once it’s dark you sit down for a seven course meal.. first course is a shot of vodka, last course is a mountain of polish desserts. In between there is a lot of fish and pierogi…..no meat allowed. I’m totally fine with that….I just want the vodka!
family is doing a slow cooker soup potluck.
So chili, potato soup, toppers, bread.
Christmas Eve is when we make THE BIG MEAL. It consists of a whole beef tenderloin and lots of different cold salads and assorted cheese plates and fruits. But none of the salads or cheese plates can be store bought. Then on Christmas Day there is no cooking and its hard to beat cold sandwiches with tenderloin. Plus sweets of all kinds. And you didn’t ask but we pretty much repeat the whole thing on New Years Eve but we do a ham instead of beef.
For the past couple of years I’ve been doing a Christmas lasagna. Make on Christmas eve and pop in the oven for dinner the next day!
We’re Texas farm country folk, so usually chicken and dumplings. This year it’s going to be chicken and cornbread dressing, since we didn’t get our fill of the latter at Thanksgiving.
christmas cake and sherry!
